#fungifact

Day 48 of posting cool mushrooms every day:

The Silky Volvariella (Volvariella bombycina) is a pink-spored mushroom with fine threads on its cap. It emerges from an egg-like sac at its base, which then ruptures and remains as a "volva."

The 🍄 smells like raw potatoes.

dangers of using #ai to identify #mushrooms. this is not a rosegill, Volvariella Bombycina. the mushroom in the photo does not have a sac at the base and clearly has a ring around the stem where there shouldnt be one at all. an amateur or young person could eat this because of their trust in google

Some lovely #fungi on Tuddenham Heath: The Miller (Clitopilus prunulus), Ivory Woodwax (Hygrophorus eburneus)?, Shaggy Parasol (Chlorophyllum rhacodes) all unusual while Stubble Rosegill (Volvariella gloiocephala) was common & widespread. #MyWalk #WestSuffolk #mushroomtwitter 1/6

I think these are Paddy Straw Mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea), introduced. Waikahekaheiki, Puna, Hawai‘i.

That's certainly not the only difference. For example Volvariella volvacea (paddy straw) has red spore print (and pinkinsh red gills in older fruiting bodies), Amanita phalloides death cap has white spore print. Still, I get how someone can mistake especially very young fruiting bodies.

It's #UKFungusday! I would have been on a foray earlier but the universe has conspired against me. Storm Amy has led to the (sensible) cancellation of the event, and I have also caught myself a stinking cold! Boo!

In lieu of any snaps from today, here are a few of my favourite pre-bsky fungi pics:
