At last week’s Ask-A-Researcher forum at the 2025 High-Dosage Tutoring Convening, researchers (including those from @jhueducation.bsky.social's Center for Research and Reform in Education!) informally answered questions related to research and tutoring practice and policy.

We are still working to recapture pre-COVID achievement and reverse declining trendlines that go back over a decade.

Tutoring is a piece of the puzzle, but we need much more focus and collective energy to address this challenge.

"You need to be constantly building a body of evidence around your intervention. It’s not over once you’ve completed your first rigorous analysis."

There are lots of steps between policy passing and students learning more. It requires adults to make changes and a clearer understanding of what that means and looks like.

In education, there is an unprecedented level of distraction at a federal level. Where states can maintain focus and discipline, states can make an impact. They are our best bet.

Great opening panel at the @accelerate-us.bsky.social #StateofHDT2025 convening diving into the intersections of research and practice. A great reminder from @MatthewAKraft:

Research is clear that as we scale interventions, results are diminished. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it.

How can we create clear incentives in the market to get evidence into practice? How do tutoring programs work in concert with other programs and align with core components of the school day? @proventutoring.bsky.social

Neitzel calls for more mixed-methods studies to accurately capture full cost: not just what you pay the tutoring vendor, need to include all the support schools provide to ensure successful implementation #StateofHDT2025

Janice Jackson: how do you sustain the conditions needed to successfully scale tutoring? #StateofHDT2025

We need more research not less - and we need to make research easier to do and responsive to the conditions schools actually have. @proventutoring.bsky.social

It takes time to build on small successes. Cost remains a substantial barrier to scaling even proven practices , and we have to be clear eyed about what that means for program design. @proventutoring.bsky.social

It's important to build a bridge between research and practice - in high-dosage tutoring and all initiatives that impact our students. #StateofHDT2025

Amanda Neitzel speaks to the need for researchers to be flexible and @matthewakraft.bsky.social discusses importance of time and humility: still a lot to be learned about how to scale up, especially for opt-in programs.

Great advice from researchers at #StateofHDT2025
