To try to explain why someone well-meaning might use 'Eire', there is quite a big move to use native names for places in English now. Cymru instead of Wales, Yr Wyddfa for Snowdon and so on. Also Türkiye, KyivNOTKiev, Aotearoa etc. Hearing that Eire is not acceptable jars with that logic.
