Remember how I said that every letter in Shavian has one sound in English, and every sound in English has only one letter in Shavian? Well, the letter 𐑦 does triple duty: the I in “candid”, the final, unstressed I in “candied” (as opposed to “Candide”), and the unstressed “e”, “i”, or “y” in a lot of words, like the I’s in “lyricist”. I’m not happy about it either. # I Can’t Stress This Enough (or At All) Shavian has no stress marker. Often enough, the location of the stress can be determined from process of elimination. But when it can’t, oh boy, it’s a headache. To date, I’ve found two pairs of words that are spelled the same in Shavian, but have different stress. 1. billow – below: 𐑚𐑦𐑤𐑴 2. diploid – deployed: 𐑛𐑦𐑐𐑤𐑶𐑛 Maybe someone can perform a search in the Readlex and find more. That someone, at least for now, is not me.

Readlex does have one word where 𐑩𐑮 is written separately in 48-letter Shavian: “infrared” (𐑦𐑯𐑓𐑮𐑩𐑮𐑧𐑛), because there’s a morpheme boundary there (𐑦𐑯𐑓𐑮𐑩- + 𐑮𐑧𐑛).

You know, the difference between /⁠ɜː⁠/ and /⁠ə⁠/ was absolutely never about vowel quality, only stress and length. I think it’s good Shavian kept these distinctions (and ‘𐑦’ for happʏ, etc) because stress is phonemic and Shaw’s rules made it otherwise impossible to add any suprasegmental marks.

Otoh, we had someone at Reddit asking why there is no Shavian letter for the vowel in ‘fire’. Obviously a monosyllable, right? It was already varisyllabic in RP, and yet we spell it 𐑓𐑲𐑼.
