Tradepub picking up breakout self-published books (typically hetslop) has the knock-on effect of there being literally fewer slots for books published the 'normal' way. Sort of interesting but suggests publishers are more risk-averse than ever: they prefer to invest in books with built-in audiences.

Simultaneously though, it's self-published books breaking out in specific genres that carved a niche for them in trade publishing: romantasy, cozy fantasy, and probably now litrpg.

Self-publishing history. Dickens published A Tale of Two Cities in his periodical. Melville, Hardy, and Twain all subsidized early works, paying publishers to issue them. And Leonard and Virginia Woolf started Hogarth Press to publish Virginia's fiction that was too innovative for mainstream houses.

Case in point: in 1918 H.L. Mencken published a satirical book titled "In Defense of Women" in which one of his main points was that women are vain, silly, self-centered, overly-emotional and inclined to gossip, but in their defense it must be said that men are much worse in all those things.

WTF? @washingtonpost.com just published a profile about Chris Buskirk—who co-founded the Thiel-backed Rockbridge Network with JD Vance—that omitted Buskirk’s ties to American Reformer, self-professed Christian Nationalist William Wolfe, & Wolfe’s Center for Baptist Leadership. 1/

My self-published novel is 90,000 words. I have no budget for marketing, much less trsnslating, but I'd rather learn Old Church Slavonic by myself and pen all 90,000 words by hand in Glagolitic letters than ask an AI word blender to touch my book.

I wanted to share something from my younger self. Back in Year 9, while studying World War I, we were asked to write our own war poetry ✍️
14-year-old me poured my heart into those words and to my surprise, my poem was published in a student poetry book at the time 📖✨

Morning all!
When I flew from my then home in Tenerife to meet an agent, my kids hoped I'd become rich and famous. Unfortunately he turned out to be a scammer, which is partly why I have self-published my books. At least I can trust me!
Today's word is #famous. Have fun!
