I think the reason Prusa3D exists is because of a previous "open-source 3D printing is dead" incident from 2013. When reprap.org became unusable (at the same time ReprapPro appeared) Prusa's changes couldn't be easily integrated so became the i3 branch.

I guess I should break down my first 3D printer as it hasn't worked for years and is just awkwardly taking up space. I could in principle fix it up but things have very much moved on and I don't need another old, slow printer. The Ender 2 (not Pro) that replaced it worked better.
