If only the symbolic elite didn't hate the people and democracy because they know a democratic system would threaten their position, we wouldn't be here today

Rancière diagnosed our current crisis incredibly precisely 20 years ago...

Hatred of Democracy
In this vehement defence of democracy, Jacques Rancière explodes the complacency of Western politicians who pride themselves as the defenders of political freedom. As America and its allies use their ...

Well my 3 year old is currently neck deep in Ranciére and asked me in the sweetest baby voice, "Dearest parent, how much should we take the Algerian context into account when we try to understand the political theories of twentieth century French continental philosophers?"
My 3 year old is reading Foucault and asked me, tears in his eyes, "why is power in society only reified through force and surveillance?"

I told him to read more Fanon

I’m not familiar with his work but for
Me the first text that really hit me in this vein was Ways of Seeing by Jon Berger and the one that was the most important to me was The Emancipated Spectator by Jacques Ranciere. I ❤️ ranciere.

Kirjoitin yhden kurssiesseen Rancièren joistain ajatuksista aikoinaan (melkein 20 vuotta sitten). Rancière on […]

Relatedly, I’ve been making my way through Nick’s Computing Taste book & realizing the main difference in our perspectives besides discipline is I understand taste thru Kant and Ranciere (and thus as specifically part of the philosophical project of classical liberalism) not Bourdieu

At the same time, inasmuch as metaphor can help us understand better, it is paradoxically determinant. In the way fiction can help us better understand reality. Or as Rancière put it, “The real must be fictionalized in order to be thought.”

My 2023 ‘Year-in-Review’; Books Edition — from top to bottom, these are the books I read in the order I read them this year. A lot of Lazzarato and Rancière, but also worked in classics like Play Between Worlds, Dark Matters, and Scenes of Subjection. Diamond’s Unmaking Mimesis was a surprise hit!

“Knowing the laws of a capitalist system does not by itself entail any energy to destroy it…What founds submission is not ignorance but mistrust: the feeling that there is no other possible world, that you’re not capable of building another world, or that others can’t do so.”—Rancière
