I'm rooting for Qazaqstan creating a land bridge to Tatarstan.
If Muscovites don't like it, even better. I'd love to know what Qazaqs call Omsk.

The old alignment is already labelled as a closed line on the openrailwaymap.
You can clearly see the winding old line and the less curvy newer one that will also offer a straighter and shorter route to Naples avoiding Caserta,

The side platforms are way too open to the city to be cordoned off anyway.
But Saint-Charles has a secret asset: an underpass connecting tracks A-H, at mid-length.
It's on OpenRailwayMap.
Built in 1982, disused since 2001.
It could be used as a Channel Terminal (as built relatively broad)

Quickly scanning OpenRailwayMap, I count one international railway link with Sweden in the far north, and four with Russia at varying latitudes.

Friday Links 25-10
This week I enjoyed the podcasts about Lise Meitner and Korea.
OpenRailwayMap is also nice to play around with, if you are interested in railways all over the world.

The problem with the locomotive is that it is not a multisystem unit; Bad Bentheim is end point for it (actually, looking at OpenRailwayMap, it is a surprise that the locomotive can even enter the Bad Bentheim station).

10/ You may be surprised to learn that the Vatican 🇻🇦 has a railway, the shortest railway system in the world. It is mainly used for freight, but there is one passanger service per week. In total there are 300m of track.

In Italien ist das irgendwie gscheiter gemacht. Da hat man seit den 1980ern Turino-Napoli ausgebaut. Jetzt arbeitet man gerade an Turino-Venezia und Napoli-Bari.
Als Grenzverbindungen sind im Bau der BBT und Turin-Lyon.

Like all of the stuff in that area is such a mess I can barely figure out what goes where without a nice slight like OpenRailwayMap (which is glorious and my favorite website)

(17/19) I could write threads just as long for those sections, but for the purposes of this thread I will keep it short: For Thessaloniki - Aeginio, I propose a new high-speed line parallel to the motorway. This could cut a further 10-15', pending speed increases all the way to Larisa.

The Flensburg-Fredericia train was diesel even though the entire line is electrified. I guess maybe DSB don't have enough trains compatible with German electrification?

(18/19) For Athens - Inoi ther is a plan to bypass the district of Acharnai in a tunnel. Additionaly, a new tunnel between Kryoneri and Afidnai and the quad-tracking of remaining parts, partially in a new alignment, would cut another 15-20' - if the new line within Athens is ever finished, that is.
