Stable OR teams contribute to better outcomes🤝✨

Each additional case done by same anesthesiologist-surgeon team 👉 ⬇️ major morbidity

🔓‼ Opportunity is knocking: ⬆️outcomes by re-organizing teams

How do we do it?

Ever had that sinking feeling after a case didn’t go to plan?
Not because of the technique
…but because something was off in the room?
Same.
And this @canjsurg.ca x @cmpa-acpm.ca podcast episode nails it. 👇

2 thoughts- “stereotype threat” when you are performing a high stakes masculine-coded job. Secondly “impression management” while being watched which increases cognitive load. #nontechnicalskills #MedEd

Teaching PACE and other graded assertiveness tools shifts the culture.

We stop equating silence with agreement.
We start treating speaking up as an act of care.

Fantastic article! definitely not soft skills - more like crucial / core skills. #NOTSS training raises the ceiling AND the floor of surgical performance.

➡️Recognize it, eliminate off-task chatter, turn down the music, alert the team. Follow your personal DFE algorithm.

Miss the transition, and you risk treating an evolving crisis like business as usual.
Stay sharp.
Know when to switch gears. 3/3

Surgery, not unlike spaceflight, is about preparation, teamwork, humility, and focus under pressure.

Do you agree?

In surgery, skill with a scalpel matters.
But so does skill with your own emotions.
“Emotion regulation”= noticing, labelling, and modifying one’s emotions.

👉 This skill is crucially important for performance/longevity in surgery and CAN improve

Surgery is the same.
Routine can flip to not-routine in a heartbeat.
Mental models matter. Slow down when you should. Adapt. Stay alert.

I didn’t have the words for it then, but it was my first glimpse into the importance of #nontechnicalskills: judgment, decision-making, situation awareness.

Technical skills matter. And beyond a certain level, it’s the surgical judgment that is the hard part. #MedEdSky #ObGynSky #SurgSky 2/2
