Faculty tend to teach how they were taught. Concepts like productive struggle are complex & (sometimes) uncomfortable for faculty. Where are safe spaces for faculty to practice these skills, so they can integrate into clinical teaching confidently? A call for engagement with FacDev? #ICRE2025
So interesting! I wonder if graded assertiveness would work here, ie concerned, uncomfortable, —> stop this isn’t safe (CUSS)
Situational awareness = more than noticing.
It’s about revising your mental model as things change and understanding others’ perspectives.
Loved exploring this in today’s #ICRE2025 SimTrek session. #MedEd #Simulation #Nontechnicalskills
Rolled up to the session and found an empty chair next to the one and only

Too true. Task sharing may be one solution such as training general surgeons and GPs to do basic procedures in other specialties. Time to get creative and learn from Indonesia etc !

Workforce density is such an important concept we teach in global surgery. In rural Canada we don’t reach recommended SAO densities either and it’s starting to show.
Amazing! This will be spoken of for generations.

Earlier this month, SOGC member Dr. Don Wilson was flown into a remote village in B.C. via military helicopter to perform an emergency pre-term breech delivery. Thanks to his fast action and life-saving skills, both mother and baby are healthy and doing well!

Emergency delivery in his home nation fulfills lifelong promise for Comox doctor
Dr. Don Wilson, a Comox Valley Hospital obstetrician-gynecologist, didn’t flinch when he was called at 7 p.m. about an emergency delivery needed in his birthplace, Bella Bella.

Managing uncertainty is a crucial #nontechnicalskill. I like that they called it 'foundational' here. We all need to #improv in #medicine
A new review focuses on the ways in which clinicians recognize and manage in-the-moment experiences of uncertainty in practice and provides practical strategies that teachers can use to help trainees build confidence in managing uncertainty. Read the full review: nej.md/43xKSQX

Testing out my new medsky handle with this message:

Human needs aren’t an inconvenience—they’re essential.

Including rest.
May you have a restful weekend!

Some pretty interesting metrics across the #Medsky feeds these last few weeks. We’ve been seeing a steady rise in posting across all the feeds over the last month.
the reader can tell! i am starting to use it already in our Global Surgery curriculum revamp. I think it could apply to Quality improvement as well.

This “a better culture “ curriculum is soo good! 🙏
Finalising 2025 CPD or planning for 2026?

The number of clinic patients/and surgeries you’ve seen under supervision with feedback matter more than the number of years that you have been in training. Get feedback on every post op XR. Never miss a case or an opportunity to present a case.
