Hot take time

The only performances at the #mensfigureskating that moved me was Maxim Naumov and Mikhail Shaidorav. Mikhail obvs had the jumps, but Max matched him in artistry. They were the only ones who gave me the same feeling as watching Yuzu, Javi, and Adam from 2018

Maxim Naumov's skate turn makes grief a public prayer. It is a longing rooted in family memory, asking how sport translates sorrow into care. Read more at https://www.americamagazine.org/ideas/2026/02/13/maxim-naumov-figure-skating-winter-olympics/.

Watching yesterday's men's figure skating program and I'd really love for these interviewers to not make Maxim Naumov talk about his parents every single time

Wearing the helmet seems no more political than Maxim Naumov holding up the photo of his deceased parents who were killed by government incompetence in the Blackhawk DCA crash.

Both should be allowed as demonstrations of respect for those sadly lost, in my view. Neither is political.
Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been disqualified by the IOC from competing in the Olympics after wearing to practice a memorial helmet featuring images of Ukrainians killed by Russia in its war on Ukraine.

Despite being unable to compete, he has become a hero in Ukraine.

I know, but IDK, I still would have sent him instead of Torg or Naumov. But yeah, his skate at Nationals was so bad.
February 14, 2026 at 6:23 PM
Speaking of, fuck USFSA for forcing that whole thing on that kid. Naumov is still very young for a male skater! He's gonna burn out if they keep making him "the orphan of the plane crash" ignoring he's not elite enough yet!
February 14, 2026 at 6:21 PM
Also, now and forever, fuck USFSA. They could have sent Jason Brown, who could have done one of the team event skates and lessened that pressure and Jason is also an Olympic vet who could have, y'know, given some key advice but noooo, gotta get those grief-porn interviews with Max Naumov.
