3/3 “but it’s just NIEHS” - aieee.

This is the first step; they’re testing our defenses. Mussolini called this “plucking the chicken one feather at a time.”

My lab has literally pioneered methods to measure health impacts of climate change that I can't get NIH grants to put into practice; meanwhile, this guy backchannels his way to being director of NIEHS? Folks: I'm going to become the joker about this one

Close Friend of JD Vance Skirts Normal Channels to Take Over NIH Environmental Health Institute - Inside Climate News
Despite a federal hiring freeze, the Trump administration just appointed a scientist who calls Vance one of his “closest friends” to head the nation’s key environmental health research arm.

The incoming director of NIEHS, who has no papers on environmental health, has received 300 fewer citations so far this year on his work than me, a first-year professor on the tenure track who literally quit his job a year ago. This rocks. I'm never going to have impostor syndrome again

NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, sent an email to staff late last Friday announcing that Kyle Walsh, PhD, a neuroepidemiologist, became director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) the Friday prior, ScienceInsider reported.

This really pisses me off.

When I worked in Francis Collins' legislative affairs shop, NIEHS was in my portfolio. This Walsh guy is not anywhere near qualified to run the institute (nor have any leadership position in it at all), on top of the utterly corrupt way he apparently got the job.

An interesting tidbit about the new director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) I stumbled across.

Kyle Walsh apparently consults (or has consulted) for BP America.

"In 2015, he moved to San Francisco and lived with me and my wife for a few months while completing the final draft (of his book"

I hope that had a guest room; otherwise JD was on the couch.

You really need to read this letter from @jeremymberg.bsky.social to NIH Director, RFK Jr ally, & true MAGA/MAHA hero Dr Bhattacharya

The appointment of a new NIEHS Director to the dear, dear friend of Vice President JD Vance without the standard rigorous due processes should be ringing alarm bells
Happy "No Kings" Day!

I just sent this email to Director Bhattacharya regarding the recently appointment of a new NIEHS Director.

This is NOT one of the institutes with an acting director.

The NIEHS (Rick Woychik) was recently reappointed for a 5-year term.

The new appointee is a associate professor at Duke (and hence already lives near NIEHS which is the one institute not in Bethesda).

In the middle of a shutdown, NIH appointed a new head for its institute on environmental health sciences. The new NIEHS director, Kyle Walsh, is a Duke neurosurgeon who studies glial cells. He also calls VP JD Vance, who officiated his wedding, one of his closest friends.

I actually had heard the the potential NIEHS appointment 2 days ago and broke the news about it at the STAT Summit. I did not share any details since I did not have confirmation.

Eric Green shared his views about the importance of process and applicant quality.

This work was spearheaded by Masataka Suzawa in my (NIAMS) and Chen Qiu in Traci Hall’s lab (NIEHS IRP) and initiated together with Masashi Yamaji’s group at Cincinnati Children’s. Wonderful collaboration with @eugenevalkov.bsky.social and Vittorio Sartorelli.

Delighted to share the story of two germline RBPs - one with little (DND1) and one with no (NANOS3) intrinsic sequence-specificity - that together build a continuous RNA binding surface recognizing a 7-mer (AUGAAUU) in target mRNA 3’UTRs, leading to deadenylation.
The DND1-NANOS3 complex shapes the primordial germ cell transcriptome via a heptanucleotide sequence in mRNA 3'UTRs
The RNA-binding proteins DND1 and NANOS3 are essential for primordial germ cell survival. Their co-immunoprecipitation and overlapping loss-of-function phenotypes suggest joint function, yet how they ...
