My first Snow Flea (Boreus hyemalis) of the winter at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve today. Nice of her to pose out in the open on a fallen leaf, so didn't need to spend hours waiting for one to emerge from the Polytrichum moss! @ynuorg.bsky.social #Mecoptera #Boreidae #ukwildlife

Dat is een schorpioenvlieg (Mecoptera). Geen wesp, geen vlieg.

Looks like a Scorpion fly in the Genus Panorpa (family Panorpidae in the order of insects called the Mecoptera). Scavenger on dead insects and will feed on remains in spiders webs - though I've not witnessed that. We only have a few species in UK. US probably has numerous species.

MECOPTERA (scorpionflies, potentially including fleas): insects with a distinctly long face like some weevils. many males have a bulbous and pointy abdomen like actual scorpions, but these just house their harmless genitalia.

I'm also not convinced that Gligar is even based on the Scorpionfly. Its type is とびさそり "Flying Scorpion", but the Scorpionfly is known as シリアゲムシ in Japanese.

idk, I think it might just be a Scorpion That Can Fly, not a representative of Order Mecoptera.

O bicho da imagem é um inseto da ordem Mecoptera, da família Panorpidae. Esse espinho caudal dele não tem função de injetar peçonha e eles são bem inofensivos. Não ocorre no Brasil.

Some insect groups have shown various fossil records during the Mesozoic Era, but have now lost their diversity.

A first of its kind military drone made in Ankara, Turkiye, the Mecoptera comes with high precision machine gun that carry more than 200 rounds of ammunition and can fire single shots or 15-round bursts. A new strike to wreak havoc in the game! #gamedev

Tonight I’m sharing a #fridayfly
In fact its 2, these are both male mecoptera aka Scorpion flies. They usually only use their tail claspers in courtship, making this behaviour I think, unusual.

I've gone down a bit of a rabbit hole with the flora/fauna of Jurassic China. Off the top of my head, other insect groups you could include in your Jurassic #paleoart: caddisflies, beetles, water boatmen, mayflies, lacewings, cockroaches, snakeflies, scorpionflies etc.

On today's episode of Moss Makeover, a moss-covered boulder gets brushed by an entomologist who decided to take a quick look for Boreus snow scorpionflies during a fishing trip. Sadly she did not find any Boreus but this moss looks really great. #entomology #mecoptera #Alaska 🧪

Can only quote - "Primary and secondary parasites. Major hosts: braconids infesting aphids (secondary parasitism), Neuroptera, predatory gall midges, coccids, Mecoptera, gall wasps, and ladybirds."

1. Mecoptera

This group with unique proboscis, related to flies and fleas(Perhaps includes the latter) were very diversified until the mid-Cretaceous, and it is suggested that they took an important role in the pollination of gymnosperms, before the bees or butterflies.

For #FossilFriday, how about some insects from the collection of the Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna? Sure, anyone can have a honking big dinosaur; but look at these lovelies! A dragonfly, a cockroach, a grasshopper, and a hangingfly.

Skorpionsfliegen sehen mit ihrem "Pferdegesicht" schon sehr außergewöhnlich aus. Sie gehören weder zu den Skorpionen noch zu den Fliegen, sondern zu den Schnabelfliegen.
