Across the river from Tondo stood another power: the Rajahnate of Maynila. Islamic, backed by Brunei, and ambitious; for a time, two rival states faced off on the shores of Manila Bay.

Let's talk about this war before colonisation. 🧵⚔️

Today, streets and schools bear Lakan Dula's name. One of the Philippines' highest civilian honours, the Order of Lakandula, is conferred in his memory.

But few know who he was or what Lakan really meant. He wasn't just a name in a textbook; he was the last true leader of a Tagalog kingdom.

Lakans didn't rule from stone palaces; their bayan (community) thrived as a vibrant wooden settlement by the river. Their power rested on loyalty and tribute from barangays (districts), as well as their role in trade networks. It was a system of networked authority, not an absolute monarchy.

The most famous Lakan is Lakan Dula, who ruled over Tondo when the Spanish first arrived in the 1570s. Contemporary Spanish accounts depict him as an intelligent and diplomatic leader, respected by his peers. Their fear of his power was such that they chose diplomacy first.

Let's talk about the rulers of Tondo...

Not kings. Not sultans. Not rajahs. These leaders were known as Lakans, a unique Tagalog title.

So who exactly were they, and how did they govern one of the most powerful precolonial polities in Luzon?

The rulers of Tondo were called Lakans. Among them, the most famous was Lakandula, who reigned in the 1500s. When the Spanish arrived, he initially tried diplomacy, but ultimately, he bravely resisted their colonial imposition. To this day, his name echoes through the annals of Filipino history.

“I am Professor Dante Lakandula and you are currently trespassing on campus grounds. Tell me I am not the disturbance you sensed,”

The winged professor offered a better path to an outcome most fruitful, as opposed to if he was the disturbance.

Lakandula stepped with a purpose, that being placing his bread on the table top to plant three kisses on three foreheads.

“Namiss ko kayo eh.”

Dante, on his ride back to Palanyag, briefly checks his phone to read the responses to his wishing well of his students for their winter break.

It fills his heart knowing he sends them home to their families happy — MERRY CHRISTMAS, PROF. LAKANDULA.

“OOH! They’re like youuu!”

Lakandula was filled to the brim with happiness, pinching their cheeks to the lightest degree and brushing their heads with a breeze’s gentle touch.

“Ang lakas lakas namaaan, lakas ng mga baby!”

In his living room, Prof. Dante Lakandula kneels into his soft red carpet while propping his elbows on the couch.

Here he embarks on his greatest teaching challenge yet — trying to get @malabituin.bsky.social’s children to speak.

“Okay, Tala. Isa pa ha, can you say… Oligarchy?”
