The "related link" to the ephemeris isn't obvious:

ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons/app...

I picked today's date, and an interval of an hour and adjusted for local timezone. I then used F12 in Stellarium to enter:

core.moveToRaDec("11h29m01.26s", "+19d41m24.1s");

which centered on Johnscalzi.

11.53501 Scalzi years old here.

As Lord High Panjandrum of 52692 Johnscalzi, have you decided yet whether the subdivisions of a Scalzi Year are arbitrary Imperial units, like Earth, or more logical than that?
January 14, 2026 at 8:00 PM
As of today I have been alive 20,703 days, and the orbital period of 52692 Johnscalzi is 2078.369 days, so in fact I have been alive 9.96 ScalziYears, I'll be ten on April 4, 2026.

I have marked this auspicious date on my Calendar. AS SHOULD YOU ALL.
My calculations may be off, but I *think* in 52692 Johnscalzi years, John Scalzi just missed his eleventh birthday.

Next step: Comparing authors by comparing the absolute magnitude of the named asteroids.
brandonsanderson: 17.04
maryrobinettek: 15.23
johnscalzi: 12.19
(not all diameters are in the db, so I took this number.)
Next conversation of writers at a con: "My asteroid shines brighter than yours."

My natal Johnscalzi is in Virgo, so I am very neat and proper when eating cursed burritos.

Some of us have been asking for SMOD's eternal nothingness for YEARS now.

If Johnscalzi takes us out, so much the better.

Checking the catalogues:

The KMTNET-SAAO asteroid classification survey determined that 52692 Johnscalzi / 1998 FO8 is an S-class asteroid.

In other words, a pile of rocks.

And the Palomar Transient Factory finds that it spins about once every 13 hours.

If I see a book with a sad sack miner complaining about the lack of paydirt on JohnScalzi I'll keep this in mind. Just solid research, not a crazy pants writer!
January 12, 2026 at 11:55 PM
I hope Johnscalzi doesn't initiate a global extinction event.

Oh, hey-- congrats to @scalzi.com and h/t to @michael-w-busch.bsky.social. Welcome to the main asteroid belt.

Now I need to learn how to mod Kerbal Space Program to add Johnscalzi to the Kerbol system.

#johnscalzi you'll need your cc tactical wipes after this breakfast.....

Just need “The Ghost Brigades” and I’ll have the whole series! I’d also like “Old Man’s War” in hardcover but I’ve already got two copies in paperback so a third might be a bit much.
