do you think it's a coincidence that I posted something to the effect of "iDigBio is making chatbots now, be careful trusting them in the near future" in a listserve last night and all of a sudden there's a post in there from the iDigBio director like COME JOIN OUR FREE WEBINAR SERIES

just another helpful little aside about iDigBio. they've finally put up who exactly is funding their chatbot, and it's our good friends NSF and AT&T. you know, AT&T, the famous stalwart protectors of biodiversity

I asked the amazing incredible Agentic LLM AI iChatBio the exact same question on August 18th and today. On August 18 is said the answer is 47, today it says the answer is zero. Can anyone explain why this is happening

Someone on tumblr asked if any of the iDigBio AI people are going to be at next month's entomology conference in USA, yeah I'm pretty sure they're tabling with the other companies selling stuff? Unless plans have changed in the past few weeks since I checked.

I did not work for iDigBio specifically, but I'm involved in databasing in general and their site (by definition) draws from my work among millions of others'

I asked it one of the questions in its example section: "How many species occurrences does iDigBio have for Canada?"

Should I be searching some other way to turn up the chat's result of about 3.2 million? Because I'm getting 4.6m in Canada, but the chance of this being a user error is high.

Honestly, I was expecting iChatBio to act like it has just learned about a new clam shrimp, because my data just showed up on GBIF about it. But, never mind, it can't even do a proper search of iDigBio now for some reason? Continue to pour money into this hole, everyone. Clearly, this is the future.

word on the street is the big ones, GBIF, iNat, iDigBio, are all going down the AI drain. A license for database software like Specify is something like 30k per year. it's bleak. iNaturalist would have been the site for me in any other universe, but I just never got into it and I don't think I will

I *suspect* iDigBio higher-ups already know how people feel about iNaturalist's recent announcement, as many people use both websites, and so they are keeping quiet about this to avoid extra scrutiny. If the new iChatBio is so wonderful, then I think as many people as possible should know about it.

See, I can put in "Myrmeleon" which are antlions, and it shows me where there is data on antlions. It is a one step process.

The iDigBio people started off staying they're aware of the environmental impacts but blah blah they still want the chatbot

Due to Firebase's free-tier limits, I added ads to cover potential future costs (Where is my Fossil? stores user/event/paleontologist data). I dislike ads too, so I'm exploring an ad-free version that drops private DB access but keeps PBDB, Macrostrat, iDigBio, etc. Would you pay for that?
