Seeing this jokes reminds me of how certain things only works in one language, but not in a different one. For example, the German word for fighter (the plane) is "Jäger", which means "hunter". "Jäger" are there to 'hunt' the bombers.

I went to UMass to get out of NJ. I had 4 years HS German so no language requirement but senior year I took Arabic. After graduating I scraped $ together and went to Cairo 1989. Certain i was with a 19 year old Cate Blanchette at film shoot there when we were both at Oxford Pension

Change occurs when our history, buried in the German language, is translated. The present and past are so much alike. We are Magnus Hirschfeld & Karl Heinrich Ulrichs #MagnusHirschfeld #LGBTQhistory #GermanGayMovement #QueerStudies #TransgenderStudies

"Is that such a common problem?", I hear you ask

Yes! There's a certain clientel of podcasts, NPR and SiriusXM and such, that commonly do that

So I listen to an English-language podcast, and wham, in the middle of it, I suddenly hear a German-language commercial. Very annoying. I hate it

In English, the tens are said before the units. For instance, the number ‘35: thirty-five’ can be broken down as ‘3 x 10 (tens) + 5 x 1 (units)’. This is different for a language like German.

As an aside, from that SB thread I am realizing that the average British person has no idea how widespread a working knowledge of the English language is in non-European parts of the world, as opposed to say, a knowledge of German or Norwegian.

i love german so much as a language because i'll write something in a paragraph and there's a two syllable german word to sum it up

Again, the meaning behind this kotowaza also can be found in other languages and cultures. In German and English, not captains are the culprits, but cooks! 🧑‍🍳
Is there an equivalent to this proverb in your language, too?

Dutch is such a lovely sounding language. Kind of “Welsh German”. Very sing-songy and softer.

Sadly I only know how to say thank you (it might be please, actually 😬) and “turn the light off”.

An even more egregious example in the article: Ubisoft accepted 6 million euros from the German government in some sort of arts fund, only to machine translate the German language option.

German is a very underrated language.

Round out we can watch Arte (excellent French-German tv channel) from the UK 🤯

Relatedly, this is pretty excellent (I think you can get English subtitles by setting the language): an experiment in living very low energy, low water consumption , while remaining low tech too […]

My favourite word for “slow motion”from another language is the German Zeitlupe. It means “time magnifying glass”

Watching MARRIED WITH CHILDREN in English is a trip. The show is so harmless compared to the German dub. Language has never been a problem here, so they say "shit", "tits", "piss", "dick" and in one episode Bud insults Kelly as "sperm dumpster". And it always ran in the afternoon here!

german is the only language for opera

fun fact, Japanese is actually my third language.

I lost most of my German when I picked up Japanese. My brain seems to only have room for 2 languages: English and not-English.

I'd like to read more of your Nemorian language. The one sample you have looks to me like a combination of:
-- Old English/German (Nas Mene)
-- Greek (Megala)
-- French/Latin (esti)

i need someone to go back in time and tell 2019!kyo to NOT take German as her elective and instead do French. German did nothing but give me language learning ptsd haha

okay but like,

when Mark Twain literally publishes a fucking essay titled 'The Dreadful German Language' and almost 150 years ago he was grappling with the same dumb shit YOU are still fighting???

honestly it makes you feel marginally less of a dipshit
"Here are the rules for German."
"Weird, but okay."
"Here are the rules for Japanese."
"More complex than a Romance language, but logical, I get it."
"Here are the rules for English."
"...this just says 'Learn Latin and conquer India' on a postcard."
"lol, lmao"

One of the things that stood out most as I was learning German (and tooling around with Japanese kinda tangentially at the same time) is - and some of you might hate to hear it - just how fucking dumb English is.

English is an utter bastard of a language - anyone trying to speak English is a hero.
