My favourite word for “slow motion”from another language is the German Zeitlupe. It means “time magnifying glass”

An even more egregious example in the article: Ubisoft accepted 6 million euros from the German government in some sort of arts fund, only to machine translate the German language option.

German I've got pleasantries in, but most everyone who's spoken German to me also speaks English, so that's got less pressure to learn.

I'd love to add on an African language, but French and Arabic covers a lot there.

As someone with a passable command of German as a second language (and technically Bayrisch as a third?), I gotta tell you, if you're a native English speaker and someone stumbles a little on our fucked up nonsense? Extend them every grace possible and give them a second to try again.

okay but like,

when Mark Twain literally publishes a fucking essay titled 'The Dreadful German Language' and almost 150 years ago he was grappling with the same dumb shit YOU are still fighting???

honestly it makes you feel marginally less of a dipshit

One of the things that stood out most as I was learning German (and tooling around with Japanese kinda tangentially at the same time) is - and some of you might hate to hear it - just how fucking dumb English is.

English is an utter bastard of a language - anyone trying to speak English is a hero.

I just learned that a word from my regional German dialect entered the Turkish language. Crazy.

The word Grumbier / Krumpir means groundberry = potato in our dialect.

This became Kumpir in Turkish, a dish of oven baked filled potatoes. It was brought to the Balkans and Turkey with German settlers.

Saw this play out during my internship in Germany. We had free German language tuition, so everyone signed up. After a couple of months, all the Brits dropped out — because they had no understanding of grammar as a concept, let alone how it might apply to German.

The German word for 'first', erste, is unsurprisingly unrelated to English's, but I like how each has a current cognate in the other language.

The English word is related to German Fürst 'prince' (the 'foremost', like Latin princeps), while the cognate of German erste can be found in 'erstwhile'.

the Germans also pretend the Low German language doesn't exist and has to die so there's no winning on that side of the border either

I hope you're ready for German Zenos part 2 because there is no stopping me today. 🥰

Just like yesterday I will add one screenshot + annotation by one, so please mute the thread if you're not interested in my Zenos language yapping!
Hope you enjoyed the StB trip so far. 💖

It sucks to have spent 14 years learning a language and then left it dormant for 10 years so basically I can read novels and watch TV shows in German without issue, but if I go to speak or write, I am forced to rely heavily on Denglisch.
Oh wait I just remembered another word:

Ich bin begeistert!

Not just a nice article about how accommodation of their native language is helping displaced children - it contains the nugget that Anchorage School District has immersion programmes in Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, German, French and Russian. So impressive! 😮😍

Two years ago, my novel "(Berlin, Miami)" came out in German. I "wrote" it by training a language model (GPT-J/GPT-NeoX) on four contemporary novels. The outcome is, unsurprisingly, surreal and fractured and, although funny, not a straightforward narrative at all. soundcloud.com/hannes-bajoh...
