This computer‑vision approach complements our broader polar sensing:active echosounders to map terminus morphology+mixing;passive #acoustics to monitor melt noise & calving; & #robotics. Together, these advance climate‑change research while keeping fieldwork practical in polar environments.

The new ship
Frigid temperatures, dense sea ice and beneath you, oceans thousands of metres deep and teeming with life and lower still, a seafloor that holds information on the geological history of our planet: that’s where the new icebreaker will be underway

So what is a 'pelagic survey'?

Essentially we're going back and forth with our vessel over an ocean area using echosounders to 'see' what's below the vessel, interpreting the data and converting it to numbers and tons of fish.

Boarfish are also a target for human fisheries as they form dense, acoustically-reflective schools that are easily spotted with echosounders. Tens of thousands of tonnes are caught and processed into fishmeal each year, in turn used to feed farmed livestock and fishes in aquaculture.

1️⃣ Within minutes, Antarctic krill swarm a light, on a seafloor lander at a depth of 387m in Prydz Bay, East #Antarctica.

🔃 The daily vertical migration of krill was monitored with a camera and an upward-looking echosounder. Krill data mostly come from ship echosounders that look down to about 250m.

The folks at biobase (not on here yet) have developed a programme to estimate macroalgae/macrophyte cover from these echosounders. They are working on a fish counting algorithm...

If it works, it's going to completely change fish science!

The figure is from a small lake so I'm kind of cheating 😁
