If we could get “20 is plenty“ across towns for cars as well, then sure, limiting ebikes makes sense. But as it is right now, it is a lot safer to go 20-28mph and flow with traffic than getting passed dangerously close by most drivers.

was just listening to NYC mayoral debate. i was surprised to hear they're actually passing laws saying ebikes and delivery motorbikes need to stay under 15 mph and upping enforcement of breaking traffic laws. i havent heard any rumblings about it in SF yet

There are a lot of knock offs of the radpower bikes in my area that travel at speeds well above 20mph without pedalling. I've seen "ebikes" with bicycle cranks travelling in the mid to high 30s without pedalling.

I'm convinved that there is widespread hacking of ebike controls and of course there seem to be a lot of fly by night companies selling what I call "Emopeds with unused bicycle cranks" I see "ebikes" routinely travelling faster than the law would sugget they would be able go throttle only.

So many of the problems with ebikes would have been avoided if we:

1. had set a maximum speed of 15 mph and
2. legally pursued any company selling something labeled as an ebike violating that regulation

Usually when an ebike runs out of battery it just becomes a heavy pedal bike.

Unnecessarily introducing "range anxiety" to ebikes seems like a big step backward.

Oh FFS scaremongering on Ebikes on WCCO. Funny how there was no balance on how many injuries are suffered by increasing size & weight of cars especially SUVs & Trucks which keep getting bigger and bigger and killing more and more people. Come on Derek James @wcconews.bsky.social just stop it.

It's encouraging to see a car company do this and reflects the demand for ebikes as car replacements! Would be nice if rivian made this more cargo capable though.

There's a lot of stupid when it comes to the UKs legislation against ebikes that's specifically to keep people in cars by not allowing specific types of ebikes to be powerful enough to do the intended job.

Moreover, that bike isn't as fast as a standard bike you can get at Halfords.

Super exciting!! If you have access to the specs, do you know if cargo will be easier to load (weight above 50lbs) and wheel width above 2in for ebikes?

The older rolling stock limit bike types between Vancouver - Portland.

Regardless of specs, I'm super pumped for the new stock! :)
