"Show respect for your kids as human beings. Don’t talk smack about them in public, even in the name of “honesty.” Openly express acceptance for them, in ways that work for you both"

Perfectly timed between #DisabilityDayOfMourning and #AutismAcceptanceMonth, during #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek
The burden narrative sucks: "Since the rest of the world tends to be unforgiving to kids who fall outside standard social operating parameters, it’s important that autistic kids are treated like people rather than works-in-progress by their own families."

Autism Warrior Parents refuse to accept their autistic child’s actual reality and needs, and instead focus on their children's "damage."

Please look into #DisabilityDayOfMourning because this is is not rare. Disabled children are victims of outrageous abuse that more often than not kills them.
A 5-yr-old burned to death in a sealed glass coffin of pressurized oxygen that an “alternative medicine” wellness center claimed could treat his ADHD. This was a cash business providing unapproved therapies. There is no evidence to support hyperbaric for ADHD; there’s not even a plausible mechanism.
A 5-year-old's death in a Michigan hyperbaric chamber has sparked calls for more oversight of unsupervised hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the wellness industry.

#DisabilityDayOfMourning I wrote about the case of Fausto Gourand in 1960s France as a way of illuminating how French institutions accepted the premise of disabled life as unworthy, at time influenced by the actions of parents. academic.oup.com/book/59516/c...

Abstract. This chapter pivots away from the activities of professionals to those of parents’ associations, which dramatically expanded in size and number i

Yesterday was #DisabilityDayOfMourning, for Disabled people killed by their own family or caregivers.
Killers who often receive more sympathy than their victims.

After surviving several neglectful, abusive caretakers, today hits hard. Vulnerability that comes with disability shouldn’t be our end, and yet it so frequently is. Many disabled people wonder when your disregard for our lives will catch up to us. #DisabilityDayofMourning

Was already having a terrible weekend before I found out today is the #DisabilityDayofMourning.

Every year I forget about #DisabilityDayofMourning. I remember it the next day, today, when it's over in this part of the world and I see the memorials.
I remember our people every day but I never remember to do it with community on the one day about that.

Worth your time.

"...however difficult it may be for families to support their disabled loved ones, murder is never excusable. There are always other options. Always."

Thank you, Shannon, for keeping it real without falling into tragedy and self pity.

Today is the national disability day of mourning to recognize the disabled victims of filicide. We need to stop making excuses for people who murder their disabled family members who they claim are better off dead.
