Grok 3 is actually pretty decent, especially with its DeepSearch and Think functionalities.

Lots of people went to BlueSky and Threads because of Elon -- and there's no denying he's often been a shitty human -- but the technological gulf between Twitter ( X ) and the alternatives is pretty wide.

To me this way of iterative searching feels qualitatively better (or more fitting to my use cases) than other recent DeepSearch tools. And compared to the "DeepResearch" overlay of long-running (pseudo-)"reports", it is simply just *useful* in many cases.

What does it mean to every United States citizen now that DOGE has been granted access to all confidential Social Security Data?
### Key Points - It seems likely that DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk, now has access to sensitive Social Security data, raising privacy concerns for U.S. citizens. - The evidence leans toward increased risks of data exposure and potential misuse, though legal protections are in place. - Research suggests this could improve government efficiency, but there’s controversy over privacy versus modernization goals. ### What This Means for U.S. Citizens The Supreme Court's recent decision on June 6, 2025, allows DOGE to access confidential Social Security data, including personal details like Social Security numbers and medical records. This means your private information is now accessible to a team outside traditional government structures, which may feel unsettling. While the goal is to modernize systems and detect fraud, there are worries about data security and potential errors. Legal safeguards exist, but the controversy highlights a tension between privacy rights and government efficiency. For now, no immediate action is needed, but staying informed is wise. ### Privacy and Security Concerns There’s a risk your data could be mishandled or leaked, especially given DOGE’s leadership by Elon Musk. Reports suggest concerns about using AI to analyze this data, which could lead to unauthorized disclosures. While federal privacy laws aim to protect your information, the broad access granted to DOGE has sparked debates about compliance and trust. ### Potential Benefits and Risks On one hand, modernizing SSA systems could lead to better services and fraud detection, potentially benefiting you. On the other, there’s a risk of errors, like decisions based on outdated data, which could affect your benefits or legal status. The controversy lies in balancing these potential benefits against privacy risks. --- ### Survey Note: Detailed Analysis of DOGE’s Access to Social Security Data and Its Implications This note provides a comprehensive examination of the recent development where the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk and tasked by the Trump administration, has been granted access to confidential Social Security Administration (SSA) data. The analysis is based on recent news reports and legal documents, reflecting the situation as of 10:12 PM MDT on Friday, June 6, 2025. It aims to address the implications for every U.S. citizen, considering privacy, security, legal, and operational aspects. #### Background: What is DOGE and Its Role? DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, is a team launched by Elon Musk to modernize federal technology and software, with the goal of enhancing governmental efficiency and productivity. This initiative, supported by the Trump administration, seeks to streamline operations and detect systemic fraud within federal agencies. On June 6, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to allow DOGE immediate access to SSA systems, overturning lower court restrictions ([Supreme Court grants DOGE access to confidential Social Security records](https://www.npr.org/2025/06/06/nx-s1-5422283/supreme-court-doge-social-security-records)). This decision has sparked significant debate, with conservative justices in the majority and liberal justices dissenting, highlighting the controversy surrounding privacy versus modernization. #### Scope of Data Accessed The data DOGE now has access to is extensive and highly sensitive, encompassing: - Names, Social Security numbers, dates and places of birth, and gender. - Addresses, marital and parental status, and lifetime earnings records. - Bank account information, immigration and work authorization status. - Health conditions (especially for disability benefit applicants), Medicare usage data (for individuals of certain ages), and assets/living arrangements (for Supplemental Security Income applicants). Additionally, DOGE can access data through agreements with other agencies, such as the IRS and the Department of Health and Human Services, broadening the scope of information available ([DOGE just got a green light to access your Social Security data](https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/business/doge-greenlight-access-your-social-security-data)). #### Legal and Judicial Context The Supreme Court's decision came after legal battles, with lower courts initially blocking DOGE’s access due to privacy concerns. U.S. District Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander, for instance, criticized DOGE’s broad access as “tantamount to hitting a fly with a sledgehammer,” noting the lack of articulated reasons for needing such extensive data ([DOGE says it needs to know the government's most sensitive data, but can't say why](https://www.npr.org/2025/03/26/nx-s1-5339842/doge-data-access-privacy-act-social-security-treasury-opm-lawsuit)). Despite these concerns, the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling, with dissent from Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, allowed access, citing the government’s argument under the Privacy Act’s exceptions for performing official duties ([US Supreme Court allows DOGE broad access to Social Security data](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-supreme-court-allows-musks-doge-broad-access-social-security-data-2025-06-06/)). #### Implications for U.S. Citizens: A Detailed Breakdown ##### Privacy and Security Risks The primary concern for U.S. citizens is the increased risk of data exposure. With DOGE led by Elon Musk, a private individual with significant business interests, there are fears about the security of personal data. Reports suggest DOGE may be feeding this data into AI programs, raising risks of unauthorized disclosure or inclusion in AI outputs ([Privacy Tip #431 – DOGE Has Access to Our Personal Information: What You Need to Know](https://natlawreview.com/article/privacy-tip-431-doge-has-access-our-personal-information-what-you-need-know)). Former SSA acting chief of staff Tiffany Flick expressed concerns that SSA’s data protections might not work, potentially allowing data to be accessed by unvetted staff, increasing the risk of leaks ([The government already knows a lot about you. DOGE is trying to access all of it](https://www.npr.org/2025/03/11/nx-s1-5305054/doge-elon-musk-security-data-information-privacy)). Technical errors are another risk, with reports highlighting outdated data, such as missing death dates for 18.9 million people born in 1920 or earlier, which could lead to incorrect decisions affecting individuals ([Implications for U.S. Citizens of DOGE Accessing Social Security Data]([invalid url, do not cite])). Status changes, like updates from student visas to work authorizations, may not be reflected, risking errors in benefit decisions. ##### Legal Protections and Limitations Federal privacy laws, such as the Privacy Act, are intended to limit the use and dissemination of SSA data, preventing improper use, leaks, or government abuse ([Legal Restrictions]([invalid url, do not cite])). Acting SSA commissioner Lee Dudek stated on February 19, 2025, that DOGE has only “read” access, cannot make changes, and must follow laws, with violations referred to the Department of Justice ([DOGE Access Limitations]([invalid url, do not cite])). However, the effectiveness of these protections in practice remains uncertain, given the controversy and legal challenges. ##### Potential Benefits: Government Efficiency DOGE’s stated purpose is to modernize federal technology and detect fraud, which could lead to more efficient SSA operations and savings for taxpayers. For example, identifying systemic fraud could reduce improper payments, estimated at less than 1% of SSA outlays ([Context]([invalid url, do not cite])). If successful, this could improve service delivery for citizens, such as faster benefit processing or better fraud prevention. ##### Operational and Staffing Impacts DOGE’s involvement has caused instability within the SSA, with seasoned employees, including acting commissioner Michelle King, leaving after refusing to grant access to sensitive data ([DOGE is disrupting Social Security](https://www.brookings.edu/articles/doge-is-disrupting-social-security/)). This turnover could indirectly affect citizens by disrupting SSA operations, potentially leading to delays or errors in service delivery. ##### Public Trust and Controversy The decision has eroded public trust, with privacy advocates and Democrats raising alarms about Musk potentially using the data for private company benefits ([US supreme court rules Doge can access social security data during legal challenge](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/06/supreme-court-doge-data)). At town halls, constituents have demanded protection of their data from DOGE, reflecting widespread concern ([News that the Doge team had sought access to the data raised alarms]([invalid url, do not cite])). #### Comparative Analysis: Privacy vs. Efficiency To organize the implications, consider the following table comparing potential benefits and risks: | **Aspect** | **Potential Benefits** | **Potential Risks** | |-----------------------|------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------| | **Privacy** | N/A | Increased risk of data exposure, leaks, or misuse | | **Data Security** | N/A | Technical errors, AI-related risks, unauthorized access | | **Government Ops** | Modernized systems, faster services, reduced fraud | Operational disruptions, staff turnover | | **Legal Compliance** | Protected by federal privacy laws | Uncertainty in enforcement, legal challenges | | **Public Trust** | Potential for improved efficiency, cost savings | Erosion of trust, controversy over leadership | This table highlights the tension between modernization goals and privacy concerns, a central theme in the controversy. #### Conclusion and Recommendations For every U.S. citizen, DOGE’s access to Social Security data means increased privacy risks, potential for errors, and a controversial balance between efficiency and rights. While no immediate action is required, citizens are advised to stay informed about updates on data usage and protection. The ongoing legal battles and public debates suggest this issue will continue to evolve, with implications for trust in government institutions. #### Key Citations - [Supreme Court grants DOGE access to confidential Social Security records](https://www.npr.org/2025/06/06/nx-s1-5422283/supreme-court-doge-social-security-records) - [DOGE just got a green light to access your Social Security data](https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/business/doge-greenlight-access-your-social-security-data) - [US Supreme Court allows DOGE broad access to Social Security data](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-supreme-court-allows-musks-doge-broad-access-social-security-data-2025-06-06/) - [Supreme Court lets DOGE access Social Security data](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/06/06/supreme-court-doge-social-security-privacy-data/) - [Supreme Court lets DOGE access sensitive Social Security data](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/supreme-court-doge-social-security-administration-information/) - [Supreme Court Allows DOGE to Access Social Security Data](https://www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/supreme-court-allows-doge-to-access-social-security-data/) - [Supreme Court Grants DOGE Access to Americans' Social Security Data](https://americanoversight.org/supreme-court-grants-doge-access-to-americans-social-security-data-undermining-privacy-protections/) - [Supreme Court allows DOGE access to Social Security data](https://www.wvtm13.com/article/supreme-court-doge-social-security-access/64995552) - [DOGE is disrupting Social Security](https://www.brookings.edu/articles/doge-is-disrupting-social-security/) - [US supreme court rules Doge can access social security data during legal challenge](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/06/supreme-court-doge-data) - [Privacy Tip #431 – DOGE Has Access to Our Personal Information](https://natlawreview.com/article/privacy-tip-431-doge-has-access-our-personal-information-what-you-need-know) - [The government already knows a lot about you.
