I loved cycling across this fabulous historic Iron girder bridge over the River Spey in Moray on my cycle circumnavigation of Britain. It's one of the highlights of the 5000 mile ride.

This weekend it collapsed.

Please restore this national treasure!

Reminds one of Jeanne Baret who completed the circumnavigation in 1769, making her the first woman to have sailed around the world; and Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, the first woman to sail around the world completely on her own, completing her 401-day voyage in 1978. Amazing women.

My father, who is Jewish, served in the United States Coast Guard for four years, and then spent ten years in the Reserves. During his tour of duty, he was on the USCGC Spar during the historic 1957 Northwest Passage circumnavigation.

Fuck this fucking bullshit straight into the sun. With a cactus.

Luckily, they were spared the formal dinner. Shortly after arriving, the governor’s wife, Lady Caldicott breezed into the room with an apology. The demands of war had called her husband back to the office. The dinner was cancelled. Both men breathed a sigh of relief. Before they could depart, however, she did ask them sheepishly if they would do one thing first. There was one person in the house who had heard their story and was desperate to meet them. Her young son John. This was how, in the middle of a worldwide war and their own fragile flight into the unknown, Ford and Brown found themselves sat in front of a fire, telling their tale to a wide-eyed young boy. Lady Caldicott had hoped they would spare him a few minutes. It was well past his bedtime, after all. As the night drew on, however, the Pan Am men showed no sign of being bored by the boy’s barrage of questions about the California Clipper, her crew and their adventures so far. Cocoa was quietly provided. Bedtime discretely ignored. Eventually, when John was barely able to stay awake, time was called. As the two men made to leave, the governor’s wife thanked them again. All she had hoped was that they’d let John shake their hand. By being so generous with their time and attention they had done him – and her – an incredible kindness. What she perhaps never realised was the kindness that she had in turn done to them, perhaps at the time they needed it most. Ford, Brown and the rest of the California’s crew had never asked to undertake this journey. They were simply normal men, in extraordinary times. What she had granted them, in the middle of those times, was a small measure of peace. A reminder of why they were doing this at all. Not just to get the California herself back to America, but to see their own families again. To get back home.

Full abstract: "Islands have a disproportionate role – as strategic locations, as imaginative or symbolic locales, as extractive zones and as ecological bellwethers – in oceanic imperial histories. They were and are places of ‘great practical use and metaphorical power’. And yet Newfoundland was seen (and continues to be seen) as marginal and peripheral, even if the biomass that was pulled out of its ocean fed – quite literally – a global network of exploitation. This article uses four overlapping maps to tell four overlapping stories: James Cook’s circumnavigation of the island in 1763–8; Lt David Buchan’s trek into the interior to contact the Beothuk in 1811 and 1820; William Eppes Cormack and Joseph Sylvester’s trek across the island in 1822; and finally, a series of story-maps created by Shanawdithit, who is apocryphally known as ‘the last of the Beothuk’. In doing so, it draws in Indigenous ‘storywork’ and cartographic histories and makes a case for storytelling as powerful methodology for examining overlooked colonial histories. These maps and stories highlight the complexity of encounter with a place rather than a coherence of colonial ideologies. Through the stories these maps help me tell, I hope to show how the peripheries of some people’s empires were the centres of other people’s worlds."
