commissioned by Sir Richard Conyers, a committed Yorkist, whose family connections reached deep into the ruling dynasty. Yorkist heraldry survives in the stonework, while effigies in the chancel, believed to be of Conyers and his wives, lie beneath an inscription asking prayers for their souls.

I've been to Aberdeen plenty, but somehow never before set foot inside the High Kirk of St Machar. Am I glad I did, though. Current structure mostly C14-C15 (with occasional tinkering since), chancel destroyed 1560, central tower collapsed 1688.

when aisles were added to the nave. Later that century the nave itself was rebuilt, though the arcades endured, and the south doorway was shifted. A lantern crowned the tower in the 15th century, probably accompanied by a spire, later cut down in 1766. Victorian restoration

Round on the east side there's a chancel extension which dates from the 1200s, with a vestry added 150 years ago alongside general restoration.

Looking back over 2025 & finding I did lots of sketches, including these of Seaton Carew on the edge of Hartlepool. Visited in poor weather in July. Despite that a lovely walk on the beach & excellent fish & chips.

Or in churches - I used to use one as an organist to discreetly check when it was time to start playing. I certainly wasn't walled up!

That one was built because the chancel was narrower than the nave, so you couldn't see the high altar from all of the church.

The surprisingly extensive ruins of St Blane's Church near the southern end of the Isle of Bute. The church fell into disuse after the Reformation and most of the remains of the nave and the chancel you see today date back to the 1100s. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Field work sketches OTD, 2016 at St Andrews Church, Heckington, Lincs. The church is famous for its elaborate sedillia & Easter sepulchre. An arguing couple + the man who is either suffering from toothache or eating flowers on the sedillia.

During one of the countless renovations, a rough metal catwalk had been added to the ceiling. It circumambulated the base of the central dome which marked the middle of the transept. Here the shorter north-south arms of the cruciform building met the longer nave to the west and shorter chancel to the east, though no altar remained in the apse beyond this. From this catwalk, four small doors could be reached, one at each of the crossing corners. Ah, so there was the roof access she’d been looking for all this time. She squared her shoulders and, determined not to look down, continued following the large woman up the impossible spiral, eyes fixed on the ramp leading to the catwalk. It was hard not to look down when she finally reached it, and her head swam a little with a thrill of vertigo when she saw how high she was over the offices. She wished Tilly and Iza could see this. Helena’s stomach lurched again when she placed a foot on the ramp which squealed alarmingly, but seemed to hold her weight. The catwalk wasn’t level, bending up and down haphazardly as it wound around the dome, roughly tacked on and seeming perilous, but the doors leading outside looked sturdy. Edith yanked one open with a tremendous metallic screech that echoed thunderously through the dome and the space below it. Then she reached back to help Helena haul herself out through it to a more solid surface, a walkway tucked between two sections of roof. The door slammed behind them with a shuddering bang.

Recent Ringing
A peal was rung at Wicken, and while it might be a little early, it was rung for Christmas. The band rang a method called Cornwall Surprise Major.

Wicken church is viewed from the chancel end. A large East window faces us, with a cruciform church layout evident. The tower is at the West end, and emerges above the chancel roof. The whole is form a neatly cut beige stone. The tower has several stages that taper and a parapet. The church is viewed across a raised churchyard, the grass is almost at eyelevel nearest to the photographer. It is neatly trimmed and there are a number of columnar evergreens. The sky is mostly blue, with light, high cloud and puffy white clouds. It feels like a summer evening.

St Mary the Virgin Church, Great Warley, Essex. I had no idea that this church was so special until I stepped inside one year just before Christmas.

The outside of the church. Grade 1 listed with a beautiful Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau interior. Interior designed by Sir William Reynolds-Stephen’s. Built in 1902 by Charles Harrison Townsend. Many different materials and textures are used in the church to create designs and beauty. Nicknamed “The Pearl Church”, in my photo you can see the mother of pearl petals on a brass chancel screen along with walnut, marble and aluminium. There is much influence from the pre-Raphaelite movement. I love the designs which came from the Arts and Crafts movement and I love the famous quote from William Morris, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”…

Vestry; ashlar, stone slate roof. Plan; nave with projecting porch on south, central tower with chapel on south chancel with vestry on north. Chancel rebuilt C13. C12 corbel table reused from former nave, with grotesque animal and beast's heads on north and south sides. South wall (from left to right) trefoil-headed lancet, C19 plank priest's door with decorative hinges within flat-chamfered pointed surround, scroll- moulded hood. Three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned window with cinquefoil headed lights and Tudor-arched head with rosette stops right. Perpendicular 5-light east window. Trefoil-headed lancet in nave north wall. Vestry lit by C19 trefoil-headed lancets, trefoil light towards apex of gable. Three stage tower, lower stage C12, second (containing clock) C13, third stage C15. North side of tower buttressed and rebuilt at bottom c1840. Former access to tower from inside tower altered to external access via plank door up 5 stone steps within buttressing.
