In the past day, Nukit posted this interesting update about the Torch2 design...

"...Not only is 50mW of defused (wide) UV light more effective than 50mW of focused (narrow) UV light at activating bioaerosols in a room, reflectors are lossy..."

In this video, I talk about a new instrument that will be operated onboard the FAAM Airborne Laboratory (@ncas-uk.bsky.social )It'll help us study bioaerosols - particles like fungi, bacteria and pollen, which influence many systems from health to cloud formation 🧪

2024 Finnish study: get ready for the next respiratory #pandemic, getting mask decisions correct (they erroneously think #Covid pandemic is past, #WHO say it is present). They conclude FFP2 & #FFP3 masks are beneficial even if fit testing isn't done or isn't effective. www.julkari.fi/bitstream/ha...

So the learned editor's response that the letter writers are forwarding a spurious argument, is itself spurious. The letter wasn't about non-infectious stuff in industry, they were talking about infectious bioaerosols and the exquisite detail in Z94.4 about how to choose.

Also, @CathNoakes, @ShellyMBoulder both worked on bioaerosols specifically, and @jljcolorado @kprather88 and many many others who know droplet is ridiculous from their work in the field, working hard to educate people and keep ppl safe

An example of extended utility beyond the reduction of bioaerosols provided by portable air filters installed in all Victorian public school classrooms. This is in a regional area where wood home heaters are still in use.

And the authors themselves note in conclusion:

> To date, it remains unclear whether reducing particle concentrations and removing bioaerosols will reduce indoor transmission of respiratory infections.

I tend to believe them, as I am no expert on the subject

so... I remain unconvinced

🚽💨 Flushing spreads bacteria!

A new study found squat toilets emit up to 62% more bioaerosols (E. coli & S. aureus) than bidet toilets.

A second flush worsens risks, but active ventilation with an exhaust fan cuts exposure by 10x.

'COVID-19 has been shown to spread via bioaerosols. Bioaerosols are airborne particles that contain living organisms such as bacteria, viruses, & fungi. COVID-19 can be transmitted through bioaerosols generated when an infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes.'

Here's what you'll find at the other end of that link. Now think about the roles those signatories hold, the decisions they've made over the last 5 years, and the fact that hospitals *still* choose not to practice good infection control for bioaerosols.

For one year, we measured bioaerosols *in situ* within clouds in the Arctic & studied their sources & potential link to mixed-phase clouds. And yes, we could directly identify them using microscopy! Check out our new paper 👉 acp.copernicus.org/articles/24/... #arctic #bioaerosols #clouds #aerosols
