Thanks fir the glimpse! Denmark is wonderful! And the countries around the North Sea do have a great wind resource, not as much as Patagonia, but enough that it nears the old "baseload" function.

The big drawback with wind and solar energy is they don’t produce any power when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine. But that so-called “baseload” problem is melting away as a battery revolution is underway.

I'm not going to share the talk as it was mostly the usual, gendered language from the right about how weak, effeminate, unreliable renewables need to be held up by strong, firm, certain baseload power generation from nuclear and gas. It doesn't deserve oxygen.

Covid lead to a baseload of mortality throughout the year

As with other viruses, one has now to assume that there is some under-reporting (my least bad guess is two at the moment)

But it is not enough to off-set the overall negative excess throughout the year

I mean the basic reason British electricity prices are uniquely high is we have done exceptionally well at decarbonising our grid *without* building large amounts of net-zero baseload power sources.

When winter storms hit, American communities need reliable dispatchable baseload power.

Keeping these plants online is critical for times like these when demand surges and intermittent energy sources like wind and solar fall short.

Winter Storm Fern has caused hundreds of thousands of power outages, though the electric grid has remained stable in part due to coal power plants boosting supply.

Tell me again how we need "reliable" baseload power sources. Sources that will often fail when the weather gets serious.

Coal + gas fail once again during a winter storm.

20GW of generation went offline in America's largest grid during Winter Storm Fern.

DOE's policies to keep old coal plants running + expand gas dependency make our grid LESS RELIABLE + risk MORE BLACKOUTS

So, if the UAE had spent the same $32B they spend on the Barakah NPP on solar and storage today, they would get a much better deal; 5.32GW of baseload AND 27.66GW of nameplate capacity generation.

And the rapid advance of renewables and storage means that deal's only going to get better.
