It's appalling to see an academic press behaving like private equity--buying a small, independent press for the sake of its backlist, then firing the editors and effectively shutting it down.

Every time I publish a book, it sells the books that came before it. Backlist income is the closest thing writers get to magical "passive income."

One of the coolest parts of prepping my most recent publication was seeing my own backlist grow. I really enjoyed my "also by" page. I'm starting to get to a place where people who want to read deeper *can*.

What this means is that I've just pushed out possibly uploading 5-6 backlist titles that somehow got missed going wide to vendors until after the new year, because it's going to take a lot of executive function and energy to upload to individual retailers directly to start to minimize my use of D2D.

All my recent books went from hardcover to trade paperback and almost all of my backlist in mass market has now migrated to trade. The role of mass market paperbacks is now handled almost entirely by ebooks. I'm okay with this but it is the end of an era.
