#BVOC
2/3s of cloud ☁️ formation arises from biosphere–atmosphere feedbacks driven by primary production 🌳:

- Evapotranspiration & biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) emissions on land

- Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) & volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions at sea

Forcing (W/m2) is underestimated.

Increasing woodland cover to 19% to help reach net-zero could change the biogenic emissions from UK woodlands. @treeswithhazel.bsky.social’s latest research shows the potential scale of change by 2050 associated with different tree species mixes.

The findings demonstrate that the impact of net-zero aligned afforestation on BVOC emissions can be minimised through careful selection of tree species, which could help to avoid unintended consequences of afforestation on air quality.

Enhanced Biogenic Emission Models for Urban Forest Edges
In the realm of atmospheric science and environmental modeling, accurately quantifying biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions has remained a formidable challenge, especially in landscapes profoundly altered by human activity. Recent research led by Zhang, Ran, and Guenther, published in Nature Communications, marks a significant advancement in this field by refining the modeling of BVOC emissions in regions where natural ecosystems intersect with urban and disturbed forest edges.

Phylogenetic patterns exist in BVOC emissions. Oaks, poplars, ceasalps, palms, bamboos ... mostly emit isoprene. Terpenes are emitted by citrus, eucalyptus, & conifers, especially Pinus sp. But, as I've found, taxonomy may be less important than successional status (early=isoprene, late=terpenes)
