First, we looked at how they correlate with species distributions, comparing them with Bioclim variables most commonly used for this purpose.

And, a first surprise, they were not doing well at all. That's not a criticism of Bioclim, but for microclimate-based models, they are probably not the best.

Freshwater invaders pose unique challenges to species distribution (or ecological niche) models used in risk analysis. New in Freshwater Science (doi.org/10.1086/737200), I identify strategies to improve predictions of suitable habitat for emerging, data-poor freshwater invaders using these tools.
The manuscript title "Predicting potential distributions of freshwater invasive species in novel environments" above the author Eric R. Larson and an affiliation at the University of Illinois, with a conceptual figure illustrating the transfer of invasion risk information from a widely distributed to an emerging, prospective invasive species. The figure's caption from the paper reads "Researchers might borrow information from supraspecific modeling units, sometimes termed avatar species or surrogate species, to make precautionary habitat suitability estimates for species under evaluation as prospective invaders that lack nonnative occurrence records. The simple example here uses BioClim bounding boxes (Busby 1991) on only 2 predictor variables to quantify underestimation of abiotic tolerances for a widely distributed invader when using only native-range occurrences relative to a total model that incorporates nonnative occurrences (A). The magnitude of this underestimation can be transferred to a species with only native-range occurrence data under evaluation as a prospective invasive species (B). Transferring this information may need to account for asymmetrical shifts in abiotic tolerances or changes in the direction of relationships between multiple predictor variables (Larson et al. 2014) and might also use the supraspecific modeling unit to identify total range-informed thresholds of habitat suitability for transfer (Liu et al. 2005)."

Decided to run a quick and dirty Distribution Model for this species in the UK (BART, bioclim variables selected by embarcadero::variable.step, AUC = 0.94, TSS = 0.82, N = 27), and it seems that there should be other suitable habitat for the species elsewhere in the UK

@GregTasney From September 2024, Gossia punctata—commonly known as the dotted myrtle—has been reclassified from "Least Concern" to "Critically Endangered" under Queensland's Nature Conservation Act 1992. This small rainforest tree, native to southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, faces significant threats from habitat loss and the pervasive spread of hashtag#MyrtleRust. In response to it's conservation concern and spread awareness, I have initiated a Species Distribution Model (hashtag#SDM) for G. punctata using occurrence data from the GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (https://lnkd.in/gqsFPPJE) The goal is to identify current and potential habitats to inform conservation strategies. 🌱 Conservationist Greg Tasney has also raised hashtag#awareness about the urgent need to protect Gossia punctata, highlighting its recent reclassification and encouraging hashtag#conservation action across hashtag#Queensland. Snow and Guymer and bioclimatic variables at a ~250m spatial resolution (current climate baseline: 1976–2005, ~9 arcseconds). It was generated on the EcoCommons Australia platform using the default algorithm configurations set by a peer-reviewed national scientific advisory panel. Predicted habitat suitability (current): Highlights potential suitable zones inland of Brisbane based on MaxEnt output. Response Curves: Illustrates how each bioclimatic variable influences predicted suitability across temperature and precipitation gradients. - BIO10 (Mean Temperature of Warmest Quarter) showing a strong drop in suitability beyond ~24°C. - BIO12 (Annual Precipitation) showing increasing suitability with higher rainfall. - BIO16 (Precipitation of Wettest Quarter) - BIO17 (Precipitation of Driest Quarter) confirming the species' reliance on seasonal moisture availability. Modelos de idoneidad del hábitat para Euplagia quadripunctaria en toda la región de estudio. Las áreas verdes representan hábitats adecuados para JTM (sensibilidad = 0.9); los puntos negros provienen de GBIF; los puntos rojos se originan en Flickr y los turquesa en Instagram. Los mapas aquí presentados se seleccionaron para mostrar el patrón general de cambios en la idoneidad del hábitat. La idoneidad del hábitat se derivó de información sobre temperatura máxima, coeficiente de variación en la temperatura máxima, precipitación total y coeficiente de variación en la precipitación total, utilizando modelos bioClim producidos con el paquete dismo en R.
