Another vid this week from Ace Dad. This one sticks in the realm of ace/aro perspectives but all of these concepts affect everyone. I was actually going to post a longer vid today about amatonormativity but this is more bite-sized for those new to the idea.

Amatonormativity refers to the social norms and practices around the belief that everyone should pursue and prioritize an (exclusive), long-term sexual-romantic relationship in their life as the ultimate goal.

Realizing I'm on the aromantic spectrum after falling down a rabbit hole to an unexpected journey of self-discovery & learning another reason why I've felt broken my whole life is due to being culturally conditioned from birth to believe a pervasive social construct known as amatonormativity

The queer community falls prey to amatonormativity just as readily as cishets do, in my experience. Because even queer people treat romantic love as a superior kind of love.

Being aroace feels liberating. I feel free from societal expectations of amatonormativity and that I am immune to the longing allos have for other people. I love the lack of desire for a kind of interaction that society has put so much glob damned baggage on.
I feel beyond those mortal desires.

Heteronormativity: the assumption that heterosexuality is the universal default.
Homonormativity: the assumption that the queer folks who act closest to heteronormativity are normal enough to be accepted.
Amatonormativity: the assumption that sex+romance is the universal default priority.

Happy Ace Week to Maeve, Vic, and Avis
I hope you each figure out those amatonormativity, allonormativity, and heteronormativity issues that some of you have to varying degrees

Happy ace week. I sometimes feel like the ace spectrum is so diverse that it's odd to put it in a single category. And yet, we all share the invisibility to the culture, all share amatonormativity.
I recently had a reminder that I am gray-ace while watching a show; it's been more than a decade since I had a flash of sexual attraction and it always surprises me. Allosexuals feel this all the time?!?
Types of attraction in our couples and sex-centric society can be a kicker. Sure, I like how that person looks. I like talking to them. I enjoy their company. That doesn't mean I want to go on a date or get intimate. For me, its usually ascetic & personality attraction; not sexual, not romantic. 💜🖤💚

Ace advocacy means:
-validating different types of relationships & not having sex be the defining factor of relationship health/romance/love
-listening to academic and autoethnographic research both
-fighting anti-intellectualism so we can deepen conversations about amatonormativity
7 / 7 🧵

Watch Heart Eyes (2025) and The Lobster (2015) back-to-back and we’ll have MUCH to discuss on the horrors of amatonormativity.
Together (2025) as well.

Psst - anything can be platonic if you want it to be. The boundaries of what is sexual/romantic/platonic are a LOT more blurred than we have been taught they are. Free yourself from amatonormativity and mononormativity!

They can, but don't mind them if they don't.

What if someone doesn't want a relationship at all?
For me, I can't control how other ppl feel or do, but I choose not to, and I'm fine with that.
I just hate amatonormativity.

I don't label myself either, tho I lean close to the aroace one.
I dunno about being a gay man cos I don't have exp in that regard, but I'm kinda against heteronormativity or amatonormativity.
People can be free to live how they are, full stop.

Ooo fantastic question.
You might be wondering what I mean when I say write ace horror. What horror? Well, I explore the horrors of how amatonormativity make love, touch, and human connection itself a scarcity. Being ace doesn’t make it easier when allos isolate.

I just thought of something. Was the beginning of Together (2025) also a commentary on unethical dog breeding?
And then extending that metaphor to amatonormativity imposed on people?

Amatonormativity has really warped the idea of romantic relationships as the standard over platonic relationships; it's time for that to change and unlearn that.

I ADORED this show, warts and all. I adore the genre.
But messaging like this (framing declining a date or being childfree as selfish, celibacy as challenge + invitation to win over, or friendzoning as a product of evil) = examples of amatonormativity I internalized too.

I really hope certain couple confirmation announcements don't make fandoms feel vindicated about their amatonormativity and be encouraged to continue that mindset.

Hard disagree (/lh). It's a romance if the story's focal point is about a/the relationship. Happy ending or not doesn't have anything to do with it. Tragic romances are fun. Romances where the main couple go with other people ultimately/diff paths are also fun. Amatonormativity=happy ending (to me)
