It's #BacktoSchool ✏️ day for my kids! And, boy, does this #AcademicMama feel FREEDOM 🔔 in the house--the week between their going back & my semester starting is super productive.

Between 3 birthdays 🎂🥳, getting ready for school, & [🌎 🚨 issues], I've had a hard time writing. Today I'M BACK, BABY! ✍️

Tonight’s 4th grade math homework prompted my daughter to challenge the premise because, “There are 3 genders, Mamá: girls, boys, and non binary.”

#genalpha makes me hopeful!

I was basically off my computer for 2 wks. Did get a bit twitchy because I genuinely LOVE the work I'm writing now, but I soaked in time with my kids, Xmas movies, 5 audiobooks, & made a decent dent in magazine pile. Now enjoying writing w kids back in school before my semester starts #academicmama

Visited the “Computer Museum of America.” My kids’ highlight? Using an electric typewriter. Mine? Explaining to them why we endured this soundtrack each time we wanted to go online. The things we now take for granted!

Son, “How does me eating this cereal help save a panda?”

Anyone have a 9-year-old friendly explanation of the non-profit industrial complex I can pass along?

Hey fellow part-time academics! What are your tips on managing workloads and expectations on your time? Hoping to get better at this in 2025. Do you set out of office replies on non work days? Do you just say no a lot? or are you some kind of timelord? #academicmama #academicchatter

Not on the cards for today: food poisoning from a kid daycare holiday party. Pretty sure it was the fruit tray. Students got their grades with 50 minutes to spare! And in between nausea I’m finalizing a proposal for a conference. Y’all, never again 😫#AcademicSky #AcademicMama

Being an #academicmama is extra hard at the end of the semester when my own work is bonkers busy, the HS kid has serious finals, & the middle & elem kids have performances & events…oh and it’s 🎄!

Here’s a sample of the sarcastic delight that is my high schooler, hopefully will make you giggle.

1. Cleaning the house.
2. Checking kids' closets for clothes they've outgrown.
3. Laundry.
4. Cookies, because we deserve them.
5. Seriously that paper that's been languishing for months NEEDS to be finished TODAY.

Me this semester. Usually my body waits until classes are over to get sick, but not this time! How is one supposed to be sick while also being a parent and a professor!? And the emails just keep coming!? #academicsky #academicmama

This touches so many #academicmama moments & resonates with my experience (baby 1 in PhD year 3; baby 2 during postdoc (transitioned to TT from leave).

A “flexible supervisor” is necessary, but we need some best practices. What is “flexible? Missed opportunities on leave cannot be recovered.
Sharing this feels vulnerable but meaningful. 💛

In this piece for @natureportfolio.bsky.social, I reflect on having 3 children during my PhD - why I’d do it all over again, but also why academia shouldn’t make it this hard for parents to thrive.🍼🎓

Hoped to snerdle this morning, but my children had other plans ...at 5:40am 🥴
Maybe tomorrow?
Who am I kidding, probably not 😅

My word of the day (and personal recommendation) is ‘snerdling’ (18th century): nestling cosily beneath the covers and holding off the day a little longer.

Morning.
