Same as me. I even went on to work for Northampton Computer Education Centre (NCEC) to create educational software for schools on the 380z, 480z and Nimbus

It’s my programming origin story - we had a room with a 380z and a bunch of (netbooted?) 480z terminals. I think that was the topology.

I LOVE the RM range of machines, they were very powerful for their time and were better than a lot of the competition at the time. Still trying to get my hands on a 380z, but I do have the 480z

What's the best display or adapter for my #retrocomputing needs?

I'm in #london and I just took ownership of a Research Machines #480z that I'm hoping to get working and in a condition where I can lug it around and demonstrate to groups of people etc.

This thing has three types of video output […]

At Junior School we had a couple of BBC B's. When the school got turned into a Middle school we gained a few more.

High School we had a room full of Link 480z on a LAN. The 480z was made by the same company who would do the later RM Nimbus your school had.

There was only one Nimbus at our school, and the teacher used that. We never got a look in.

We had to deal with the baby brother, the Link 480Z!

Though they did have the metal cased, armoured edition! 😆

Thanks, so glad I fixed this beauty.. it’s an RM Link 480z which was popular in uk schools in the early 80s.

The 380 and 480Z are all our school could afford. But then perhaps it's because I'm so old that the BBC Micro wasn't invented yet!

It is - we had RM 380Z and 480Z machines at school, but I did my coursework at home on my Acorn Electron. I also had to write a fourth program to print out screenshots - those were the days!

In the 90s, there was a room of these at my secondary school. As far as I could tell, they were never used, presumably had just been left there after the Nimbuses took over. I was always fascinated by them and would have loved to have got my hands on them! My primary school had an old 480z

I am meant to have a 480z. But I am also not meant to blow £700 on scrap silicon.

Hi, I am a new owner of a 480z (I used to program them back in the 80s for NCEC).... is there any way to get access to your archive? Would love to download some and build up my library.
