#3I/ALAS
Here is the arrangement of the solar system today, Dec 19. Our interstellar visitor, 3I/ATLAS, is on its way out of the solar system - the next close approach will be with Juno at Jupiter in March - but _today_ will be the day it comes closest to Earth - alas, not very close at 1.8 AU away.

For a second, I thought "Wait, they found ANOTHER one?!" I suppose I'll just have to settle for the interstellar mysteries of 3I instead. Alas.

Patrick Michel told me that, alas, Hera has no instrumentation to study the 3I/ATLAS tail, and they can't image it due to the Sun angle.

Astronomers have now spent three months explaining how 3I/ATLAS is an entirely ordinary comet except for being interstellar - and how its being so similar to solar system comets is itself interesting.

But popular media articles would still rather promote Avi Loeb's blatant nonsense instead.

Alas.

I mean I'd LOVE if there was a way to send Juno to study 3I/ATLAS. Who knows what it is? We need a closer look.

I like to think everything's aliens until proven otherwise.

Well, every mysterious legit astronomical phenomena, that is—Tabby's Star, shiny spot on Ceres… Not *everything*.

But sheesh.

Since I was asked:

Interstellar object 3I / #A11pl3Z will not be passing close enough to Earth to be observed by #TeamRadar.

Alas for the loss of Arecibo (although depending on the exact size of 3I, even Arecibo might not have been enough).
