It's #Fishmas in July (er, June) at #IAGLR25! 🎄🐟

Come out to N207A this morning for the #scicomm symposium "Creating Resilience in Science Communication in the Age of Misinformation" - I'll be talking at 9 AM CT on what #25DaysofFishmas can teach us about using social media for communication.

#25DaysofFishmas never stops bringing joy year after year. One of the best parts of the holiday season. 🐟🎄🥰
Special shout-out to the OG #25DaysofFishmas crew who've been there since 2016 - you should follow them (if you aren't already) for more fishy fun throughout the year: @drfishsg.bsky.social @solomonrdavid.bsky.social @wildlifebiogal.bsky.social @donaldorth.bsky.social @jasonbarnucz.bsky.social

A year ago i left xitter and left all my friends behind. It was tough for a while. Now they're almost all here on bluesky. The only thing missing for me this year was #25DaysOfFishmas

Another #25DaysOfFishmas is in the books. The last fish of 2024 is the Striped Shiner.

Thanks @drkatfish.bsky.social for coming up with this idea and making it happen every year!

Not flying reindeer, but a flying fish.

🐟🎄 Thanks for following along for my version of @drkatfish.bsky.social's #25DaysOfFishmas. I hope you learned something cool.

Always fun to have a cue for my daily sketch. I've sketched all the #25DaysOfFishmas the last couple years!

At some point maybe I'll even learn how to do fish art correctly!

One of my favorite traditions is the annual #25DaysofFishmas crossover with #SundayFishSketch, and this year was no exception - I'm always blown away by everyone's sketches! Thanks to @lampichthys.bsky.social for leading one of the coolest showcases for #sciart on social media

And with that, Year 9 of #25DaysofFishmas is complete! Thank you to everyone who's followed along and shared these silly (and occasionally interesting) posts about #GreatLakes fish. I hope you have the chance to celebrate the amazing world just under the water's surface all year long!

Merry #fishmas! Along with being adorable, Lumpsuckers are used in Atlantic Salmon #aquaculture to eat sea lice, resulting in interesting genetic differences between wild and domestic populations. #25daysOfFishmas

We have reached day 25 of #25daysoffishmas and we draw to a close with my subject of study, Cyclopterus lumpus, which actually lacks a full common name and is simply called "lumpsucker". This species really stands out from the rest of the family, in terms of appearance, size and behaviour.

As striped shiners sometimes spawn in nests already built by other species like chubs, this nest-sharing behavior can lead to hybridization with other shiner or minnow species. The offspring will often share characteristics of both parents, making them more even challenging to ID #25DaysofFishmas

During the spring spawning time, male striped shiners turn a pinkish color and develop tubercles (small bumps) on their heads. While they'll sometimes build their own nests out of stones, they'll also often share/borrow the pre-made nests of other species like the hornyhead chub #25DaysofFishmas

This little light of mine: the striped shiner’s scientific name (Luxilus chrysocephalus) illuminates its appearance 💡: “Luxilus” is derived from Latin meaning ”little light” and “chrysocephalus” means “golden head” #25DaysofFishmas

The striped shiner is often found in large schools in shallow rocky pools of small streams and creeks. Their distribution ranges from the southern #GreatLakes region through parts of the Mississippi + Ohio River basins, and south to Texas and the Gulf Slope #25DaysofFishmas

While lots of species of small fishes are commonly referred to as “minnows,” the striped shiner has the distinction of actually being one (scientifically speaking) - they’re part of the family Leuciscidae, a group known as the “true minnows” #25DaysofFishmas thefisheriesblog.com/2018/09/17/m...

#Fishmas Day is here at last, so break out the candy canes because Day 25 is all about the stripes - the Striped Shiner (Luxilus chrysocephalus), that is!

We end this year's #GreatLakes #25DaysofFishmas by shining some light on a small fish who’s not often in the spotlight ✨

So there we are, that's #25DaysOfFishmas done for the year. Merry Fishmas to all and, for those that celebrate, Merry Christmas. Here's to 2025 - who knows what fish we'll see!

And there it was! Forgive me for being sincere ('tis the season) - I've done a lot of cool stuff, but few moments this year were as enchanting. I've loved deep sea fish since I was a kid, and getting the opportunity to finally see this was a surreal privilege #25DaysOfFishmas

Indeed, during a cruise earlier this year, we caught a bunch. One evening, I had the bright idea of scooping up a fresh one and taking it into the darkest place I could find - the ship's walk-in freezer... #25DaysOfFishmas

So, why leave this quite mundane little mesopelagic fish for the end? It's nice, but is it Fishmas Day material? Well, as mentioned, they're really very abundant and common, and I've had the chance to sample a few for my research project and PhD #25DaysOfFishmas

As far as bioluminescence goes, hatchetfish are pretty standard counterilluminators. They do, though, have a neat trick - they use a light organ facing the eye to check how bright their camouflage is, allowing them to match the sunlight better #25DaysOfFishmas
