A fantastic vintage 1940s 50s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and copper abstract biomorphic modernist pendant. An intricate incredibly unique piece of mid century modernist wearable art jewelry! Complex design with a bar across the top from which hang three rows of cutout shapes in sterling silver that are all attached at backs with copper wire that runs the length of each row. A sort of modernist jewelry 'Rorschach' test that could be interpreted a number of ways. Biomorphic forms are abstract shapes, patterns, or designs inspired by living organisms and natural structures, using fluid, curving lines that suggest plants, animals, or body parts, breaking away from rigid geometry to evoke nature's organic qualities and dynamism in art, architecture, and design. Biomorphic jewelry design is a 20th century phenomenon especially from about 1940 to the 1960s. Measures 2.75" tall by 1.75" widest, and weighs 10.7 grams total. Unmarked, and I'm certain it was originally purchased in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that would have been lost over the years. Could be worn on a chain, a black cord, or a neck ring depending on the wearer. I can provide a black cord at no extra charge if desired, just let me know when making the purchase. From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her job in the publishing industry, and who acquired the bulk of her collection in the 1950s/60s/70s eras. Excellent vintage condition.

Having resided in the same private collection for over fifty years, Isamu Noguchi’s The Comb displays the essence of the artist’s poetic and deeply spiritual sculptural practice.
Carved from a single piece of solid black granite, Noguchi’s form creates a dynamic and dramatic silhouette against whichever backdrop it is placed. Executed in 1962, The Comb also contains elements of Noguchi’s preferred circular forms.
“I love stone because it is the most flexible and meaning-impregnated material,” he once said. “The whole world is made of stone. It’s nothing new. It’s as old as the hills. It is our fundament… Stone has a quality of durability. It does not pollute. It merely goes back to earth naturally” (I. Noguchi, quoted by S. Hunter, Isamu Noguchi, New York, 1978, p. 121).
Throughout his career Noguchi worked in a number of different materials including wood, slate and marble, and during the late 1960s granite became one of his favorite mediums. After spending time working with Constantin Brâncuşi in Paris in the 1920s, he turned to modernism and abstraction, infusing his highly finished forms with a palpable sense of mystery. As an artist he sought out materials that he felt matched the character of the places with which he felt an affinity. He felt granite evoked nature, the earth, and a sense of longevity. “I have since thought of,” he once said, “…my close embrace of the earth as a seeking after identity with some primal matter beyond personalities and possessions….I wanted something irreducible, an absence of the gimmicky and clever” (I. Noguchi, op. cit., p.257).

A one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver modernist statement necklace signed Artura. So unique, and such an incredible piece! This necklace is a showstopper! You won't see another like it! The pendant at bottom measures 4" wide by 3.25" tall, and hangs on the integral chain measuring about 28" wearable that will simply slip over most heads as there is no closure. (One could be easily added without taking away from the design if preferred. Weighs a super hefty 92.2 grams total. Marked "Artura" on one of the links near the back as shown. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. A big impressive piece of modernist wearable art that will look amazing no matter the occasion!
