Stella Popowski was a Polish emigree who left Poland with her parents and siblings in the late 1940s for Cuba, where they lived during the war years. After the war, Popowski studied art in Paris before moving to Taxco where she designed for Antonio Pineda and Los Castillo. Around 1960, she opened her own business in Taxco, but it was short-lived. In the mid-1960s, she moved to California where she spent the rest of her life. During her years in California, she concentrated on her art and design projects. This is one of her designs for Los Castillo. Made in sterling silver with black onyx (onix negro), turquoise inlay, azurmalachite inlay, and malachite inlay. A very time-consuming technique, this 'onix negro' design would have been very expensive to produce, and of course that was reflected in the asking price when it was being sold in the Los Castillo showroom. It's marked design number "014P" which makes it one of her earlier designs at Los Castillo. The early Eagle mark is also present on it which places this piece from 1948 to about 1952, I'm saying circa 1950. The design is of a stylized figure who looks to be doing some kind of ritualized dance. Probably based on a pre-Columbian model, this is a very loose modernist interpretation. It measures 3.75" tall including the bail at top. Marked "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle, "Hecho en Mexico" and "Onix Negro". A very rare design that I have only seen this once!

A large vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver and smoky quartz geometric modernist Snowflake design pendant on chain necklace by the firm of Kultaseppa Salovaara of Finland. A large and striking geometric Snowflake design by one of the more sought-after of Finnish modernist silversmithies! The pendant measures 2-1/4" long by 1-1/2" wide, and hangs on a 19" silver chain that is likely the original. The necklace weighs 0.5 ounce, or about 15 grams total. The 8 small smoky quartz stones are each between 3-4mm in diameter, and are fully faceted round brilliant cut with open back settings. The pendant bears the marks of Kultaseppa Salovaara, also "925H" (H stands for Hopea, the Finnish word for silver). The chain is marked "830S" (the S letter for Silver was also used in Finland, especially for items intended for export). Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural vintage 1960s handmade 900 silver modernist Shark Fin design ring created by internationally acclaimed artist Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999) of Ecuador. Sometimes referred to as "the Picasso of the Andes", Guayasamin is an internationally recognized artist and sculptor of the highest caliber, and his jewelry is wearable sculpture! His artwork is held in major museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He wasn't a silversmith, so he contracted with local Quito silversmiths to produce his work. Great mid-century sculptural modernist design from his earliest design period! Entirely handmade hand fabricated from 900 silver (the standard in Ecuador and most of South America at the time), with a red tigereye pebble mounted straight up like a Sharks dorsal fin on their back, the part that we see just before they attack! The stone rises almost an inch above the finger! See my article on the life and work of Oswaldo Guayasamin in the archive section on the Modern Silver magazine website (no longer viewable directly online, but if you visit the Wayback machine on Wikipedia you can see the old Modern Silver magazine pages in the Internet Archive, and I've also copied it to my Pinterest page on the work of Guayasamin, just search his name there to find it.) His work is rare, and many of his earliest designs were one of a kind. I haven't seen this ring design before, so it is certainly very rare, but also possibly unique. The ring measures 7/8" wide at top, rises 7/8" above the finger, is a size 7.5 to 8 US, and weighs 12.2 grams total. The red tigereye stone measures about 5/8" by 7/8" by about 1/8" thick. Marked inside the band as shown, "Guayasamin" and "900" for 900 silver. Excellent vintage condition.

A huge rare and early vintage 1940s 50s handmade wood and sterling silver modernist brooch pin by California iconoclast artist and designer Milton Cavagnaro (1913-1993). A rare miniature masterpiece of biomorphic modernist art to wear! Reminds me of the Henry Moore or Barbara Hepworth wood and string sculptures from the same period! Cavagnaro's jewelry can resemble ethnic fetish objects, and quizzical figurines, delightful linear designs, classic 1950s amoeba shapes, and subtle textures and colors. Some are miniature mobiles. The pieces make a virtue of humble materials, and are beautifully crafted. Measures an impressive 3-1/4" by 1-1/2" and weighs 10.4 grams total. Marked "Cavagnaro" at back as shown. I've only seen one other of this design, and I'm guessing it's from quite early in his jewelry-making career! Excellent vintage condition. A rare pair of vintage 1950s handmade wood brass and sterling silver geometric kinetic modernist design screwback earrings by California modernist Milton Cavagnaro. They dangle from the ear moving every time you move your head! This simple but statement-making design is a knockout! Like all pieces by Cavagnaro, these earrings are extremely rare and hard to find, and you won't find another pair like them for sale online! Each measures 2" long by 5/8" wide, and the pair weigh 6.6 grams total. Marked "Cavagnaro" at back impressed into the wood as shown, also marked "Sterling" on screwback sections. A gorgeous vintage 1980s 90s handmade sterling silver and turquoise Mexican modernist cocktail ring designed by Antonio Castillo for Los Castillo in Taxco. A roughly triangular turquoise cabochon with silver beads at four points, and encircled by square sterling wire. Really exceptional stone! Entirely handmade, and like all of Antonio's designs from this part of his life, the work of a mature and sophisticated designer! Measures just over 1" long at top by just under 7/8" wide, size 8 US, and weighs 6.4 grams total. Marked inside the band as shown, "Los Castillo Sterling TA-01". An exceptionally striking natural turquoise stone of vibrant color, and great quality! Excellent vintage condition.

A rare pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver Mexican modernist Horse Head design earrings by Salvador Teran for Los Castillo in Taxco. Salvador Teran was cousin to the Castillo brothers of Los Castillo, and he was a designer and silversmith there for their first decade or so before opening his own shop La India Bonita in 1952. This is one of his very rare and very early designs while still at Los Castillo. The design is comprised of two layers of sterling silver with the upper layer cut-thru to reveal the underlayer which has been oxidized black for contrast with the shiny polished raised sections. The earrings are overall kite-shaped with an abstracted design of a horse head. Each earring measures 1-3/8" tall by 7/8" wide, and the pair weigh 14 grams total. The marks at back are under the screw mechanism and show a great deal of wear, but I can make out "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle around the Eagle 15 on one earring, and "Hecho en Mexico" with design number "108" on the other earring. Los Castillo rarely used a designer mark of any kind, and although this brooch doesn't bear his name, it is undeniably the hand of Salvador Teran from his early days. Los Castillo also made the matching necklace and bracelet both of which I have seen several times in the past, but this is the only pair of the earrings for this design that I have run across. Excellent vintage condition.

A big vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and rose quartz abstract modernist pendant on neckring necklace from Kaunis Koru of Helsinki Finland. A lovely and very wearable design likely by Mirjam Salminen who was one of the principal designers at Kaunis Koru at the time! The pendant measures 2" by 2" and hangs on a 17" wearable neckring. Total weight for the necklace is 25.5 grams. The pendant is marked with the Kaunis Koru maker mark, the benchmark "AP" for Kari Aarre Apell, the date letter V7 for 1974, the Finnish national silver mark, and "925" for sterling silver. The accompanying neckring is unmarked, but has been tested and is guaranteed to be sterling silver. Kaunis Koru was a design studio, so they never made the items themselves, they contracted with local silversmiths. Over the years, most of the greats of Finnish Silver design worked at Kaunis Koru including Pekka Piekainen, Bjorn Weckstrom, Mirjam Salminen, and many others. Excellent vintage condition.

A singular vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and druzy pyrite Mexican modernist cocktail ring by Citlal Castillo. Citlal is the niece of Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo, and the cousin of Emilia Castillo, and quite a talented designer in her own right! An entirely handmade sterling silver modernist cocktail ring featuring several bead-tipped wires at top that reach around and grasp the druzy pyrite stone! Such a unique ring, and no doubt a one of a kind piece of wearable art from mid century Mexico! Adjustable ring band presently about a size 10 US, but really will fit just about any finger. The ring measures just under 1" long at top, rises 5/8" above the finger, and weighs a hefty 17.3 grams total. Marked inside band, "Citlal" with her logo of two opposing letter C's that look like flowers or grasping hands, "925" and "Hecho en Mexico". From the estate of a very successful business woman in the publishing industry from NYC who traveled extensively and had exquisite taste! Excellent vintage condition.

A huge vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade sterling silver and glass marble modernist cocktail ring. Made from what was originally part of a sterling silver fork, this was a trend with Avantgarde jewelry makers of the period, especially Hippie jewelers, making jewelry from old stuff, recycling. Probably the most incredible such piece that I have run across in my 45+ year career! This ring rises a full inch above the finger, the glass marble is wrapped in prongs formed by two of the tines of the fork, and the other two tines curl downwards to form the ring band. So unique and one of a kind! Size 7.5 to 8 US, and weighs a super hefty 25 grams total. Unmarked, but tested and guaranteed to be solid sterling silver. No doubt originally sold at a gallery or an art fair and would have come paperwork from the artist/metalsmith that has been lost over the course of years. Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver and blue topaz modernist pendant on chain necklace. A striking modernist design and entirely handmade! The pendant measures just under 2" long by 1/2" wide, and hangs on an 18" sterling silver chain. The stone measures 5mm diameter. The pendant has a very small hallmark at back which are basically unreadable, but tested and guaranteed to be solid sterling silver and genuine blue topaz. (The matching earrings are marked "925" which I am sure is the mark on this pendant, it's just been badly struck or worn over time.) The chain is marked "AZ Italy" and "Sterling". I have the matching pair of earrings sold separately in another listing here on Ruby Lane. Excellent vintage condition.

A superb and very rare one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver abstract modernist design cocktail ring by mid-century silversmith/enamelist James Parker of San Diego California. James Parker's jewelry was always hand-fabricated and one of a kind, and never cast, made in multiples, or mass-produced. An exceptional ring by this noted California modernist! This ring is part of a collection purchased directly from the estate of the artist. This one of a kind piece of 1950s wearable art by James Parker is entirely hand-fabricated in heavy gauge solid sterling silver forming a design of a raised undulating line over an oxidized background all within an egg-shaped frame that sits atop the ring band. James Parker was in London in 1939 where he purchased a ring from the Georg Jensen shop that inspired him to make jewelry himself when he returned to the US after the Second World War. He was a member of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego and showed his distinctive jewelry designs in a number of national exhibitions, including California Design X at the Pasadena Art Museum, and Craftsmanship in a Changing World in 1956 at the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NY (now known as the Museum of Arts and Design).Parker's jewelry also appeared in American Craft magazine in the 1950s and 60s. More recently, several of his pieces were exhibited in the San Diego Craft Revolution show and book from the Mingei Museum in San Diego. The ring measures 7/8" by 3/4" at top, size 7 US, and weighs 13.7 grams total Marked inside the band as shown with the James Parker conjoined and stylized JP maker mark with "Hand Made", also "Sterling" to the side. Excellent vintage condition.

an ANGULAR vintage 1960s 70s handmade sterling silver modernist Wheat Plant design brooch by Max Brammer of Copenhagen, Denmark. Max Brammer was in business from 1963 to the 1990s, and he was known for collaborating with the Georg Jensen silversmithy on several projects. This brooch is from his own workshop, and is a beautiful example of his fine workmanship and talent as a designer! Measures 2.75" tall by 1.25" wide, and weighs 10.8 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Brammer Sterling Denmark". A unique vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade sterling silver organic modernist Jelly fish design brooch. Entirely handmade and no doubt a unique piece of wearable art! A hammered convex sterling upper section from which dangle many silver wires resembling the 'arms' of the jelly fish, at least that's what it looks like to me. So unique, and no doubt a one of a kind dimensional design! Could also be easily adjusted to be worn on a chain or cord, and wearing it on a neckring with a bail-attachment on the pin stem would look amazing! Measures 3" tall by 1-5/8" wide by just over 1/2" thickest point. Weighs a super hefty 31 grams total or just about an ounce of solid sterling silver! The marks are lightly hand-etch on the pinback mechanism, and are very hard to make out in my photo or indeed even with a loupe in person. I've included my drawing of the marks in my last photo. The marks read, "Sterling Sibby" and another maker mark as shown. From the estate of a successful career woman in the publishing industry from NYC who traveled extensively and had incredible taste! The ring is a size 9.75 US presently, but could be easily sized by a professional. Total weight for the ring is 0.6 ounce, or about 17 grams. Marked inside band as shown, "Sterling 925" and although it isn't marked I am certain that it is of Mexican origin. Excellent vintage condition.

For sale here is a RARE vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade sterling silver and amazonite geometric modernist ring by South African metalsmith/designer PJ of Johannesberg. A striking geometric design entirely handmade and with a lovely amazonite stone at top! Measures just over 3/4" diameter at top, ring size 7 US, and weighs 7.4 grams total. Marked inside band at top as shown, "Sterling Made in S. Africa" and maker mark "PJ". According to a short article I found online, all of the modernist jewelry made in South Africa was by a small group working in Johannesberg in the 1960s and 70s. A rare vintage 1950s 60s handmade sterling silver black onyx and turquoise Mexican modernist design brooch pin pendant by Toño taller in Taxco, and from his early 'piedra negra' line of jewelry. An exceptional design and quite rare - this is the only example of this design that I've seen EVER! Measures 2-5/8" by 1-1/4" and weighs 17.8 grams. Fully marked at back as shown, "Tono Piedra Negra Cecilia Hecho en Mexico" with design number "287", also "Sterling Taxco 925" in a circle around "AC". Shown on a Mexican sterling silver neckring in one of my photos that is not included, but can be purchased separately if desired. Excellent vintage condition.

A sleek vintage 1980s handmade sterling silver and wood Mexican modernist necklace designed by Antonio Castillo for Los Castillo in Taxco. A wonderful sleek design with no extraneous details to take away from the simple beauty of the wood and silver! His silver and wood jewelry is getting harder and harder to find, and this is such a great example! Much of the Los Castillo wood jewelry from the 1980s is 'plateado' (silver-plated) not solid sterling silver like this one! The necklace is composed of long tubular beads of wood capped on either end with sterling spheres, and alternating with sterling long tube beads. V-spring and box closure at back. The necklace measures about 30" total length by 1/4" wide, and weighs 41.4 grams total. Marked on the closure at back as shown, "Sterling Los Castillo". Excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind vintage 1960s signed and dated entirely hand wrought sterling silver and rock crystal quartz abstract modernist torque pendant necklace. No doubt a unique modernist creation, this necklace is signed at back "D G Logan '69" and "First prize winner Flint Art Fair '69". A one of a kind piece of art to wear! The neckring measures 4-1/2" by 4-1/4" inside diameters, and will fit a 15" neck or smaller. The pendant measures 3-3/4" by 3/4" wide, and can be detached from the neck-ring at either side to be worn on a chain or black cord as preferred Unmarked for metal content, but tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver and rock crystal quartz as described. Excellent vintage condition.
