Vegas is fun for two days. On the third day it starts to turn. And on the fourth day it becomes soul-crushing. Back in 2016, I stayed there for a week to cover the Dem and Rep caucuses, which were on different days. It nearly broke me.

During the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, voters elected 16 Blacks to Congress, including two senators from Mississippi. The last departed in 1901 as Jim Crow kicked in. It would be 28 years before another Black won a federal race and 71 years before one represented a Southern state
