“You’re going be a real pain in our ass, you know that?” The little gremlin, whose name tag identified him as ‘Bobby Tables,’ said. “Good for you. Let’s eat.” They passed many wonders. An overheating server on a desk that was being used to brew coffee. A cubicle filled to the top with discarded pizza boxes. An inflatable unicorn positioned with other desk toys to look as if it was about to breed with a bobbing water bird. The Grand Buffet glowed in the half-light of the Department of Infernal Technicians. It stretched on forever. The smells were amazing. Every type of pizza. Pasta. An inexplicable salad bar. After one point, a wall that continued so high Blake couldn’t see the top of it. The scent of salt and pork was nauseatingly delicious. Bacon, bacon cupcakes, sausages wrapped in bacon simmering in syrups, bacon wrapped in bacon, vegetables wrapped in bacon, vegetables simmering in bacon grease. If it could be wrapped or stuffed, bacon was doing both. “Take a tip. The Wall of Bacon will kill a living human.” The five generous chins of the seven foot tall gremlin behind the counter wobbled, skewing the chef’s hat and dribbling grease on his apron. “Bobby, what did you do now?” “The Consultant sent them. My boss, the Great Gremlin.” Bobby explained taking a stool.

Several workers were continuing stripping the place, but the electricians were staring at the P.A. system they had just ripped the wiring out of as an ostinato crescendoed. “Here comes the Big Ham himself.” Miss Satine glowered at a point of light descending from the ceiling. As it entered, Ozzy Osbourne’s “Don’t Blame Me” blared through the dead P.A. The ball of light expanded into gyrating toruses of gold and six enormous white wings. Upon the tori opened many eyes as the light advanced. The workers who had not stopped now let their burdens crash to the floor and lay prostrate in submission as the light approached. As they eyes turned to the balcony, Cyrus felt a flare of heat surrounding himself and Miss Satine, who did not bow but only maintained her glare. A sandaled foot stepped lightly upon the Earth as the light faded into a tall older man, white haired, with a neatly trimmed beard, glasses, and a white tweed vest and slacks. In one hand, a cigarette holder, in the other, pouring down his throat, an emptying bottle of whiskey. The bottle crashed to the floor and evaporated. From every mortal a small stream of Haze, pure hate, was sucked out of them and the cigarette as he took a drag. He exhaled white smoke. “About God-damned time. Really? Ozzy Osbourne?” Miss Satine said, arms crossed. “We like Ozzy.” Said the Voice of God.

Yet I must.” The Metatron bowed as they ended the waltz. She stared hard at him and saw in his eyes a look she had never expected to see. Like a grandfather would give to a favorite child. “That was the most beautiful violence I’ve ever seen” Lord Satan said. “Elegant, cutting. A wound that will never heal.” The Metatron nodded. “I’m sorry.” “Don’t ever say that to me again.”

A woman emerged, a dark complexion with silver hair, and quite thin. Her face was a reflection of her husband’s enthusiasm, in that it was reversed. She was the anchor to reality that kept Mason from flying off into the stratosphere.

“No crowns in a storm, my Ramiel. Call me Vlad.” I joined my other hand to his own. To lower himself in status for me touched me to my very heart. He was a prince. I felt very unworthy of the honor but would not dare turn down his kindness. He raised a hand, keeping both mine in his other. He was cold. No wonder he sat so close to the fire. He raised a piece of sweet to my mouth and gestured with his eyes. I opened my mouth and, as he pressed it to my lips, I no longer felt any cold. Such a simple act yet done with such care. So intimate. “The first time, you must savor. I help. Do as I say.” He rubbed the sweet around my lip. The sweetness was intoxicating. The scent of roses filled me. I attempted a remark on the scent. He gave me a gentle disapproving look, and almost playful, pressed the sweet further into my mouth. Finally allowing it to touch my tongue, the flavor of rosewater burst on me. His smile was infectious, and I could feel myself growing giddy at his joy at seeing my pleasure. He nodded and I realized I was allowed to bite. It was light and chewy and cloying all at once. Like chewing sugar and rose petals, but something deeply sensuous about the experience was stirring a delight in my I could not place. I greedily devoured the last few bites and grew quite flush as I realized he was allowing me, encouraging me, to lick the sugar from his fingers. “It should not go to waste.” Vlad said, smiling. “My ancestors were hostages of the Ottoman court. We developed a fondness for this confection from Turkey-land. It is my pleasure to introduce you to it. Would you like another?” I nodded and felt a heat that had nothing to do with fire on my face as he raised another piece with his fingers and kept hold of my hands. He must have noticed me looking, as he released them then. “Apologies. You must learn to savor, my Ramiel.”
