Downscaling from 1440p internal to 240p letterboxed. Makes the whole game look like a painterly PS1 pre-rendered background.. that you can move around in.

Mighty strongman Karnov, faced with a bemused fishman, hurls himself at the slippery foe, grunting and belching out three full fireballs in a ferocious all-out attack. Karnov, fresh off of his exhilarating fishman battle, tries his luck against a tyrannosaur, a much more capable opponent. Being unfamiliar with the tyrannosaur's game, he gets owned, and in being so owned, becomes blue.

Prepping for my Demon's Souls CRT photo-series, discovered that RPCS3 has a mod/patch that enables a janky but functional (and very impressive) photo mode. Absolutely delightful. But also kind of daunting. I must rise to meet this new technical ability.

Hot-blooded titular hero Gowcaizer charges tragic Kamen Rider-esque hero Brider with a super elbow. Bored servicemen spectate with great interest. In the distance the techno future city glows like a jewel in the darkness. Hero Karin, apparently nicknamed "Clumsy Heavenly Goddess" (how mean!), taunts devilish glam rock and roller Hellstinger on stage, slapping her mostly-bare butt cheek. Hellstinger, taking the challenge literally, winds up to kick her right in the caboose. What did she expect would happen..? Fabulous Policewoman Shaia strikes a sassy pose right out of the Sailor Moon playbook. Musclebound superhero Captain Atlantis halts his attack to admire her charm. Nearby body builders, clad in perilously small bikini bottoms, take notice and flex extra hard. In an empty church painted by pastel sunlight, ninja Fudohmaru unleashes his ultimate sword attack on handsome Kyosuke Shigure, whose wooden sword seems especially outclassed here.

Super Mario brazenly thieves a large key out from under the nose of a dormant Phanto, rousing the demon to terrifying action. Princess Peach confronts the mad bomber Mouser, catches one of his bombs and gives the drug-crazed beatnik a taste of his own medicine. Fungal Warrior Toad trods upon the burning desert sand in the shadow an ancient pyramid, carrying a dead, murdered snake above his head as a terrifying warning to his enemies. In a frozen hellscape, Luigi gets owned by a sentient snow ball. Damn, man. It's just sad.

I don't understand Japanese, but this image from Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka's ending seems to suggest that, after winning a martial arts competition, she returns home and her lesbian lover forces her to be a girly girl.

Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka is very embarrassed because her lesbian lover has forced her into girly clothes. Her shredded punk threads have been replaced with a fancy dress with a plunging neckline. Her unkempt hair has been brushed and styled. Around her neck, a choker emblazoned with a pink heart. With delicate lace gloves she attempts a polite curtsy... but she would much rather be beating down punks in the asphalt jungle. A tiger should never be caged.

Having bested all of her human peers, Rough and Tumble Punk Fight Girl Mayu Uzaka now comes face to face with a gigantic muscled demon straight off of Akira Toriyama's desk. A demonic humanoid mech lurks in shadow. Titular hero Bari-Arm prepares to enact its revenge. Speeding through a Gundam-esque space colony, Bari-Arm, in humanoid mecha mode, chases and battles a larger humanoid android. Exploding ordnance fills the sky in an orgy of violence. Bari-Arm comes face to face with a gigantic enemy mechadragon. A laser gun reaches out from the mechadragon's throat, threatening to erase our machine hero. In plane form, Bari-Arm swerves away from the chomping jaws of a gigantic bio-mechanical dragon monstrosity. Beautiful blue waves, unmoved by the violence, stretch out endlessly beyond the drama.

Under a lovely sakura tree in the evening, Girl With Gun hops away from a large, shirtless muscular man and fires her trusty pistol at him, grazing his forearm. The man mountain grimaces in pain-- He wasn't expecting his prey to be packing. In the still of the night, Cute Sword Guy One and Cute Sword Guy Two engage in a deadly yet beautiful dance of death. Their swords clash and sing, their eyes meet. I hope they work things out and hook up. Cute Goth Sword Guy grabs Jovial Halberd Guy by his shirt collar, manhandling him rudely. The villain's red eye focuses on his victim with laser precision. In the middle of the market and in broad daylight, Cute Goth Knife Girl assaults Girl With Gun viciously, swiping at the young lady's neck veins. This baddie brought a knife to a gunfight and she's doing pretty well, all things considered.

Purple-haired Ninja Lady Ayane, clad in a fancy dress that is perhaps inappropriate for the environment, battles wrestling woman Tina Armstrong on the white sand beach outside a resort. Karate master Hitomi, clad in battle denim, invigorated with the hot blood of combat, winds up for a charging punch. Her opponent Kasumi recoils, stunned by the fierce barrage of blows. Having weathered the battering, Kasumi turns the tables on Hitomi, throwing her to the dirt. Fall leaves float on the wind and crunch underneath the awesome lady violence. The crisp Fall air is disturbed by Hitomi lifting opponent Kasumi clean off the ground with a thunderous uppercut. The two deadly women square off, eyeing each-other with the intensity of hunting lionesses. Autumn paints the encounter with a master's hand.

Succubus Lilith cuts Undead Samurai Bishamon right in half with her blade-like bat wings. She is serene in that moment, as if cutting men in half is where she was meant to be. Devilish vampire hunter B.B. Hood grabs Victor (a classical Frankenstein) and whirls him around, grinning maniacally, until he practically comes apart at the seams. He's not enjoying it, no sir. Vampire Lord Dmitri vigorously defends his lair from Bee Woman Q. Bee, performing a break-dancing kick that she vaults over, stinger slashing. Their elegant battle resembles an elaborate dance. Cat Woman Felicia gracefully launches backwards off of Vampire Hunter Donovan after mounting and slashing him repeatedly with her murder mittens. He reels in pain, limbs twisted.

Of the four classic-styled Castlevanias I played for #scanlinesunday this spooky season, this one was significantly less enjoyable than the other three. Just too difficult.

Heroic Simon Belmont, muscled thighs bared as God intended, faces off with the legendary Gorgon Medusa, cracking his Vampire Killer whip as she steps to him. As is customary, her titties are out, but Simon shows extraordinary bravery in not succumbing to titty terror. In a spooky dark science lab filled with macabre implements, Simon battles a Frankenstein the height of two full men. Electricity crackles around the monster as it lumbers to life. Death, the Grim Reaper himself, suffers the bite of Simon Belmont's Vampire Killer whip. Simon reaches the throne room of Castlevania and prepares to confront the Prince of Darkness. Dracula, however, is unaware of the beefy barbarian, seemingly lost in a wine glass of blood, perhaps reminiscing about times long past. His heart just doesn't seem in it, this time.

This section of Silent Hill may be the most effective horror-craft I've yet experienced.

I'm over 40 and I still occasionally have a recurring nightmare where I'm lost and/or trapped in a school. The developers successfully turned my nightmare into a video game level.

Silent Hill protagonist Harry Mason investigates a blood-stained grand piano in the music room of Midwich Elemental school. A lengthy yet cryptic note hints at some sort of bullshit puzzle. Harry spontaneously blacks out, and when he wakes, the puzzle has been auto-magically solved. Hallelujah. In the nightmare world (??), Harry investigates a small, emptied locker gruesomely stained with blood. The camera angle is tilted to queasy effect. Harry discovers a horribly mutilated corpse chained to the wall. Flayed and lacerated, its face has been beaten to a dark mush. A muscular beast more mouth than body stalks Harry in a black oubliette, the roar of a burning corpse illuminating its tumor-like mucus-covered skin in the inky darkness. Harry clutches the most impotent shotgun in any video game.

Victor von Gerdenheim, a classical Frankenstein if ever there was, absolutely punts Morrigan, sexy succubus, like a sports ball. He plugs his nose for some inscrutable reason. Morrigan's tights come to life and make an angry face. She, in addition to being punted like a sports ball, is painfully zapped by Victor's electricity powers. Sexy Merman Rikuo has invaded Vampire Lord Dmitri's inner sanctum and lashed him with his long, sticky tongue. Tossed about like a doll by Rikuo's powerful tonguing, Dmitri growls in frustration. In a futuristic cyberscape, Sasquatch (a yeti) uppercuts cat lady Felicia with his boulder-sized paw. Roaring with mouth gaped like a hippopotamus his inky abyss of a throat displays a massive uvula. You could work that thing like a speed bag. The Undead Samurai Bishomon does battle with Hopping Vampire Hsien-Ko in a cold mountaintop shrine. It seems like they have some sort of beef. The kind of beef that can only be resolved by deadly combat.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1, 1997) concludes.

I must confess:

I cheesed Galamoth with the Shield Rod + Alucard Shield.

And I'll fuckin' do it again.

Brave Alucard, irradiated with healing energy, takes flight and delivers a precise poke to the eye of the gigantic Galamoth, the dragonkin superboss possessing of a truly absurd amount of hit points. The Dark Priest Shaft presides over the resurrection of Dracula. Alucard destroys him easily, as if swatting a fly. Resurrected once again, Dracula, Prince of Evil, sits upon his throne of chaos. With grim stoicism, Alucard prepares to destroy his accursed father. Dracula is defeated and Castlevania has crumbled yet again. Alucard bids farewell to stalwart allies Richter Belmont and Maria Renard, intending to return to his self-imposed exile. Maria, however, has desires of her own, and follows after him, ensorcelled by his supernormal sexiness.

Hapless protagonist Harry Mason has entered The Silent Hill. Thick snowflakes fall around him as he is enveloped by rainbow-glazed grey fog. Stumbling through the fog, Harry bumbles upon a grisly scene in an alleyway. Unidentifiable gore and viscera are sprayed and pasted across the concrete as if cast by an angry child. After a frightful episode, Harry awakens in a diner, having seemingly been rescued by a tough lady cop. Ketchup and mustard bottles stare at him, horrifying in their implacable mundanity. Harry's rescuer introduces herself as Cybil Bennett and, after providing exposition, immediately gifts him, a suspicious stranger, her service weapon, establishing herself as a solid, nay, extraordinary homie.

Symphony's Inverted Castle is ridiculous. Game was already incredible and then they hid a second game in there. The chutzpah.

Brave Alucard leaps and swipes his Moon Rod at the primordial demon and undead titan Beelzebub, Lord of Flies. Immobilized by meat hooks, the demon summons his swarm of flies, big and small, to harass our half-vampire hero. In the inverted colosseum, Alucard does battle with fiendish doppelgangers of his comrades from a previous adventure, Trevor Belmont, Grant Danasty and Sypha Belnades. The mocking mimic impersonating Sypha shoots billowing fire while the false Trevor throws a skeletal crucifix. Grant is on the ceiling, off-screen. In an epic sword clash for the ages, Alucard lands a sword strike on the great Gorgon of myth, Medusa, dealing 69 points of damage. The gorgon reels, snakes that form her hair hissing and snapping angrily. Death, the Grim Reaper, towers over noble Alucard, demonic sorceries crackling in his boney hands. One laser eye beams out from under his mouldering hood, trained precisely on our hero. Alucard attacks aggressively while his faithful faerie companion, as ever, hovers nearby, ready to provide aid.
