Back in the research mines. Hey, you know that John James Audubon, the famous ornithologist and infamous slaver, once had the fur trader Edwin Thompson Denig pillage an Indigenous burial ground? Good thing Audubon has nothing named after him anymore, that would be creepy and evil.

Ewers When John James Audubon, the noted artist-naturalist, visited Fort Union in the summer of 1843, Denig assisted him in collecting bird and mammal specimens and helped him to obtain the head of 1See Edwin T. Denig, Indian Tribes of the Upper Missouri, Bureau of American Ethnology Forty-sixth Annual Report, 399-400, and pp. 71-72 of this book. XV FIVE INDIAN TRIBES OF THE UPPER MISSOURI an Indian chief from a tree burial near the fort. Denig enlivened Audubon’s stay with stories of Indians and animals of the region. At the naturalist’s request he wrote a description of Fort Union. Dated July 30, 1843, this is the earliest known example of Denig’s descriptive writing.” It is also the most detailed description of the construction and use of that most important Indian trading post on the Upper Missouri ever published. Denig stated that he was then in charge of the office of the fur company at Fort Union, a position comparable to that of chief clerk. His old friend, Alexander Culbertson, was Fort Union’s bourgeois at that time.

Interesting how progesterone is converted into androgens and corticosteroids. Perhaps if someone was taking progesterone from an exogenous source, it could cause these levels to rise (not that anyone would do that, of course).
Enzymes, their cellular location, substrates and products in human steroidogenesis. Shown also is the major classes of steroid hormones: progestagens, mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, androgens and estrogens. However, they partly overlap, e.g. mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. White circles indicate changes in molecular structure compared with precursors. David Lancy, who has published dozens of books and has been a leading anthropologist for fifty years now, straight up cites Wikipedia in his most recent book. I am never feeling imposter syndrome ever again.
The last term that deserves some explication is “Indigenous.” There are a variety of competing terms. We are discussing people who live in small, face-to-face communities; hence, “village” or “villagers” is sometimes used as shorthand. Other terms that have been used to conveniently label the communities of interest include “heritage,” “traditional,” “ethnic,” “nonindustrial,” “Aboriginal,” and “premodern.” “Primitive” and “tribal” were both popular at one time but are no longer considered appropriate. Most definitions of “Indigenous” stress the importance of stasis and continuity. For example, “indigenous peoples are culturally distinct ethnic groups whose members are directly descended from the earliest known inhabitants of a particular geographic region and, to some extent, maintain the language and culture of those original peoples” (Wikipedia 2023b).

When Joan recanted and swore to wear women's clothing only, the prison guards in the secular prison stripped her naked and forced her to dress in men's clothing. When she eventually did, the English authorities used this as an excuse to execute her. It was all about her gender non-conformity.
“How can they treat me so cruelly that my virgin body which has never been violated will be burned in the fire?” Turning to Bishop Cauchon, she said, “Bishop, I die by you.” He responded, “Oh, Joan, you do not submit. This has happened because you did not keep your promise but relapsed.” She fired back, “Alas, if you had put me in a church prison and confided me to guards of the church, as should have been done, this would not have happened. It is why I appeal from you to God.” 50

Today, I learned that Joan of Arc was executed primarily for her gender treason more than her supposed heresies.
On May 23 Joan was brought to a room near her cell where some of the judges and assessors had gathered. The University of Paris’ decision, broken down into six articles, was read to her. In addition to charging her as a heretic, schismatic, apostate and witch, one article drew attention to her male clothing. The indictment stated: You have said that you wore and still wear man’s dress at God’s command . . . and so you have put on a short tunic, jerkin, and hose with many points. You even wear your hair cut short above the ears, without keeping about you anything to denote your sex, save what nature has given you. They went on, telling her it was blasphemous for her to have worn male garb, especially during the times she received the eucharist. Since she claimed she would rather die than change her clothing, she was charged with transgressing divine law, Holy Scripture and the canons of the Church. “You are full of vain boasting . . . given to idolatry and worship[ing] yourself and your clothes.” 9 This charge would become the basis for Joan’s conviction.

An abstract of a Letter from Mr. Anthony Leewenhoeck at Delft, dated Sep. 17. 1683. containing some Microscopical Observations, about Animals in the scurf of the Teeth, the substance call'd Worms in the Nose, the Cuticula consisting of Scales. I Formerly sent some Observations about Spittle, which I find have been Printed in the Lectures and Collections of Mr. R. H. in the year 1678. Since that time l have often observed my Spittle, out of this Consideration, that if there be any Animals dispersed in our Body, they may at some time or other, be emptied out of the Ductus Salivales into the Mouth. But my expectation in this particular has fail'd, for I have perceived no Animals, or other thing in Spittle than what I formerly mentioned. Tho my Teeth are kept usually very clean, nevertheless when I view them in a Magnifying Glass, I find growing between them a little white matter as thick as wetted flower: in this substance tho I could not perceive any motion, I judged there might probably be living Creatures. I therfore took some of this flower and mixt it either with pure rain water wherein were no Animals; or else with some of my Spittle (having no Air bubbles to cause a motion in it) and then to my great surprize perceived that the aforesaid matter contained very many small living Animals, which moved themselves very extravagantly, the biggest sort had the shape of A. their motion was strong and nimble, and they darted themselves thro the water or spittle, as a Jack or Pike does thro the water. These were generally not many in number. The 2d. sort had the shape of B. these spun about like a Top, and took a Course sometimes on one side, as is shown at G. and D. they were more in number than the first. In the 3d. sort I could not well distinguish the Figure, for sometimes it seem'd to be an Oval, and other times a Circle. These were so small that they seem'd no bigger than E and therewithal so swift, that I can compare them to nothing better than a swarm of Flies...
