“Most days we remain unaware that we receive much more than we give, and that it is only through gratitude that life becomes open and free.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 1943

The era we are living in offers too many illustrations of greed, narcissism, and hatefulness. But I still believe we can recommit ourselves to serving the common good of all Americans. [Artwork by Jennifer Bloomer]

Remember: The recipe for economic growth isn’t tax cuts for the rich. It’s investment in our people — in health care, infrastructure and education — to build a strong middle class.

You don't grow the economy through trickle-down nonsense.

This is how our government has been corrupted:

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office
2) Elected officials rewrite rules in the donors' favor
3) Donors make huge profit
4) Repeat

We must get big money out of politics.

It is the root of our dysfunction.

To anyone who thinks it’s an “exaggeration” that the rule of law is in danger…

U.S. Senator Mark Kelly is being investigated for the “crime” of telling people not to commit crimes.

We’ve fallen far.

The vicious cycle of monopolization:

1) Corporations argue that their growth is just part of the free market.
2) Use their monopoly power to gouge consumers.
3) Take a portion of their profits to make political donations.
4) Lobby against antitrust enforcement.
5) Repeat.

"Things happen" sometimes, like when you walk into an embassy to apply for your marriage license while your bride-to-be waits outside, but then you get bonesawed to pieces for having exercised freedom of speech as an US-based journalist and have to be carried out in a series of suitcases.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

They outnumber public interest advocates more than 20 to 1.

A House panel is holding a hearing on a proposed ban on Congressional stock trading.

This ban is long overdue. Why should members of Congress be able to use privileged information to make money on the stock market, while they’re supposed to be working for you?

Just the sort of muddy anecdotal waters that could usefully be clarified by an actual government jobs report
Fed's Jefferson: Anecdotal reports about the job market have been mixed; some firms have slowed hiring or cut back, others are adding employees and investing.

Remember: An estimated 70% of congressional Republicans may financially benefit from the tax cuts in their Big Ugly Bill.

While cutting Medicaid and food stamps for millions — including many of their own constituents — these lawmakers may be enriching themselves.

Priorities.

Remember: The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few isn't just bad for our economy. It's corrosive to our democracy.

When the wealthy and well-connected control our political system, regular people don't have a voice.

The result? The demagoguery and corruption we're seeing now.

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to imagine a world where the Republican congress develops some moral conviction and holds the president accountable, yet we've seen plenty of examples where the weight of bad decisions carry us towards more. Praying for moral conviction for all of us.
