If you notice the tall wedge shape in the Sibley Breaker (picture in the org post), that's actually a headframe under there! Some mine sites chose to keep them protected from the elements.
This is what the boiler room and hoists that powered these headframes (and the rest of the mine) looked like.

More cool mine ephemera: headframes! Used to pull up coal, people, and equipment either with elevators or conveyors. Powered through steam generated from boilers using the very coal they harvest from the ground, pulled up through huge hoists at ground level, gears on top. They're HUGE.

#1 most profitable INDUSTRY I mean lol. Breakers brought in coal from headframe hoists or mine conveyors, then cleaned, processed, and broke (usually anthracite) coal to then be shipped off in train cars. Cool stuff

Coal Breakers are such interesting pieces of architecture. Fascinating building complexes that used to be the heart of the #1 most profitable in the USA, now totally defunct. Absolute death traps but they look VERY cool lol
