This is a good place as any to ask. I'm looking for some High/Epic Fantasy that has an emphasis on language, character, and thematic development. Not interested in an unfinished series, though. Any suggestions? Thanks!

When it was initially released, I'd heard it was going to be four books. It wasn't until recently that I found it it was sold to the publisher as a trilogy.

Not quite on the level of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but a gallant effort nonetheless.

I'm not familiar with the geography of Paris at all.

It's just the first time I've ever looked somewhat closely at a painting, and I was just impressed with the possibility of that little detail.

It looks like the golden-haired dog is sniffing the ground and the gray dog is already aware of it. Are there any other clues in that picture which may indicate the wind direction?

Are the dogs in the center, in that lighter patch? The gray dog is looking to the left, and the golden one is a little further back and coming forward?

Yeah. I became interested in Portugal because of Macao. Both places punched well above their weight among their geographic neighbors.

It does seem like a beautiful country—heat waves, fires, and Chega excepted.

You've referenced Portugal/Portuguese/Portuguese culture a couple of times on here, as well as a part in Karla's Choice. Is there an underlying interest there for you?

I grew up on the Canadian prairies. That looked like a winter scene even before I read your post.

Can I ask for best High/Epic Fantasy reads (that aren't Tolkien 😁)? I'm on the lookout for notable works in that subgenre.

Culture vs fun has always (co-)existed. It's a trip to a museum or national park vs a trip to an amusement park or a major shopping center. There isn't anything new to the argument, just a shift in the proportional share of each and how loudly people shout their views.
