“These people?” Sahri hears chords of despair behind his anger. “These people are the ones you want to lay down your life to save? They’re nothing to you--have never done a damned thing for you!” She can’t look away from the sheer intensity of his eyes--the flames burning behind them. His passion was terrifying and enrapturing all in one, and it made her legs feel weak. “Surely you have people you truly care for--more than these hopeless fools. Is it not them you should be concerned about instead? Do you value your life so little that you’re content to waste it on the first craven you come across sobbing for help? Why must you always--?” Emet-Selch’s eyes go wide, and he cuts himself off with a deep sigh. He holds his head and shakes it. Sahri’s heart pounds in her ears. “...Oh, what’s the point? I’d have better luck talking to the tree behind you.” When he returns his gaze, Sahri finds it subdued. The passion is not gone, but filtered by a layer of resignation. She needs it back. Oh, this was a dangerous game to play, she knew--Gods, what had come over her? She wanted to stoke the fire again. Emet-Selch’s look turns quizzical. “...And why, pray tell, are you looking at me so peculiarly?” “It almost sounds like you care about me, Ascian.” She gives him a small smile, as if to taunt him. She could swear he nearly rolled his eyes. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” he sighs. “Spreading your joy and love to all you meet. What an utterly frustrating woman.” Sahri’s next words shock even her. “Care to let out some of that frustration, then?” Emet-Selch scowls. “I don’t catch your meaning, hero.” Sahri’s pulse quickens under his scrutiny. She’d think she would be nervous, with what she was about to ask next from one of her worst enemies. But instead, a steady fire of her own burns, and above all else, she feels...excited. “Hit me.” Two words, said with exacting deliberation. Emet-Selch looks utterly baffled. “...Some ploy to prove to your ‘friends’ the unwo… “Of course…” Foulques shakes his head, chuckling smugly. “Sahri. Do you realize the true reason the padjal assigned you this task?” “...Enlighten me.” “Fear,” he declares. The impact of the word washes over her in waves. “The conjurers may think themselves part of a sanctified order, but deployed on Gridania’s battlefields, they are soldiers, the same as any other. What he fears is your potential. You’ve the heart of a warrior, Sahri, and the man wishes to stifle it into docility.” “I...I am no warrior,” she attempts to deny, yet her voice wavers. “The voidsent you slayed would beg to differ.” The man takes a step closer to her. “Cowardice grips your master, as it does all Gridania. You have not been here long, I take it?” “A few months,” she admits. “Though I have often visited in the past.” “Is that so? Perhaps you have already realized, then. Why is it that the man fears you.” Foulques’ smug grin has faded, yet his sincerity only stirs more unease within her. “You said you wish to help the people of these woods recover, but the Gridanians--they do not deserve your assistance. Oh, they may laugh with you now, thank you and praise you. No doubt you will be hailed for returning the stone into Ywain’s arms. “Yet you, a Keeper of the Moon, will never be a Gridanian. Not truly. Not in their eyes. They will dispose of you the moment they find it convenient. Any Gridanian would, your master included.” Foulques takes his lance in hand. “If you developed into a warrior, they would no longer be able to do so easily. Thus, you would pose a threat.” “I do not believe that,” Sahri hurries out, fighting the chill slithering through her body. Any Gridanian… Her mind conjures a hall of cages. “Some Gridanians are as you describe. Many, even. But…” She thinks to the comforting presence of Miounne, of drifting off while leaning against the woman’s shoulder. “Not all. And not Master E-Sumi Yan. I am certain he merely wishes to remind me not to use conjury for selfish ends… “You don’t fool me, Azem. You’re not playing the same game Emet-Selch was.” The declaration gets Azem to quirk her brow, so Thancred continues. “Emet-Selch is a conniving bastard, but he was honest. He truly wanted to see if we could accomplish this. If we could become useful to him. As ‘allies.’” Thancred lowers his head, sharpening his gaze. “You, though. You’ve already made your decisions about our usefulness. Your only interest in this ‘game’ is to revel in its cruelty. You wish to sup on our misery as your revenge. And not even revenge for our complicity in the Exarch’s lies. No, you want revenge for our rejection of you back in Amity.” Thancred swears he feels the temperature plunge a few degrees. Azem’s eyes bear into him, intensity growing by the minute, but she has not a word to say. Not a word, because she knows he is right. “What is this, Thancred?” she asks, tone even. “Is this your attempt at an intervention? Do you imagine laying out your cold ‘truth’ will compel me to leap back into the Scions’ arms?” “You’ve betrayed every one of the principles the Scions are built on,” he spits back at her. “You’ve foisted this terrible burden upon Ryne for no other reason than to hurt her. By the Twelve, now you’re claiming to have murdered the godsdamned Sultana!” He grits his teeth. “There is no coming back, Azem. I wouldn’t waste my breath on something so pointless.” “Why, it would tear Ryne’s heart in two to hear you say that.” A small smile returns to Azem’s face, her eyes darting to Thancred’s hand when he retrieves the gunblade on his back. He continues to speak as he loads its cartridges. “That Ryne now has such capacity for hope is a wonderful thing. Vital, for one so young. With luck, it will only continue to grow.” He finishes loading his weapon, stretching his neck. “But on the other side of hope is reality. And reality is, your heart is rotted and black.” “Thancred,” Azem repeats, now on alert. “What is this?” Thancred rests his gunblade in b… “Good evening, Y’shtola.” She hears a smile in the woman’s voice, and one blooms upon her own face. “I’ve brought something for you--two somethings, in fact. Might I come in?” “You know that you may.” Y’shtola ushers her inside and shuts the door behind her. Sahri walks towards the table, and Y’shtola is proud to note that the woman stands tall as she does--as tall as she reasonably might with her diminutive stature, of course. She’d come a long way since the lows she’d fallen to during their time in Slitherbough. Finally, Sahri had relinquished that man’s stranglehold on her. Y’shtola hears the sound of Sahri setting dinnerware upon the table, and she eagerly strides forward, sitting before the items her love had brought for her. She takes another whiff, confirming the objects’ nature. “Does my nose deceive me?” She asks the woman teasingly. Sahri takes a seat beside her. “With Garlemald newly plunged into anarchy, you take the time to do something so frivolous as to prepare me a homemade vanilla tart?” “And tea!” Sahri adds. “You specifically wished for both. Obviously, the Crystarium does not have your favorite Sharlyan blend in its stocks, but I did my best to recreate the taste with some honey and mint. I hope you like it.” Y’shtola chuckles. “You truly are absurd, Sahri Rhoshaan.” “Maybe so,” the woman concedes. “But...you love me for it, don’t you?” Warmth swells in Y’shtola’s heart, and her smile turns gentle. She places a hand on Sahri’s cheek. “I do,” she says quietly before pulling the woman into a short kiss. Sahri hums in contentment. She leans forward and cuts free a slice of the tart, scooping some onto a spoon and holding it before Y’shtola’s mouth in a near-criminally sweet gesture. Y’shtola gladly takes it, taste buds delighting in the taste. Ah...She’d not realized the benefits of making a partner of a professionally trained culinarian before becoming involved with Sahri. I love redemption arcs, but I feel like a lot of people fundamentally don't understand what they are. Or have mislabeled what they are on account of fandom memes or tvtropes or something. A character can't be "worth" redemption. They can only "need" it. And so they strive to claw themselves out-
