Heavy footsteps thudded on the floorboards. Hongjoong glanced over his shoulder. Mingi leaned against the wall, cigarette resting lazy between his lips. Smoke curled around him, drifting toward the window and over Hongjoong’s summer flowers. A delicate gold chain pooled in the hollow of his throat. He looked like Adriano Panatta in the seventies—thighs thicker than Hongjoong’s waist, a forest-green polo with a Johnny collar stretched tight across his chest. An ace if there ever was one. “We have a new neighbor,” Hongjoong said, turning back to the flower box. “I liked the old one.” Hongjoong snipped a bluebell and dropped it into the tulipiere. He watched Mingi in his periphery. “He’s very good-looking.” Mingi’s eyes narrowed. “Better looking than me?” Hongjoong could feel Mingi’s temper rising. It made his heart race; it made him want to be mean. “Answer,” Mingi said, sharper now. Hongjoong faced him. “Give me a compliment, and maybe I’ll give you one.” Mingi pushed off the wall. “Your red hair suits you,” he said, cigarette bobbing with each word. “It makes you look like one of your little poppies.” Hongjoong took a step closer. “Try again.” Mingi’s eyes flashed—desire or anger. After ten years, Hongjoong still couldn’t tell the difference. The cigarette burned down. “I’ve never wanted a man the way I want you.” Desire, then. Hongjoong moved toward him until the smoke stung his nostrils. Closer still, until he had to tilt his head back to meet Mingi’s eyes. All his life he’d hated being small, but with Mingi, it was his power. He heard the change in Mingi’s breath. “Prove it.”

Seonghwa watches him through the one-way glass. Dejected, exhausted, bruised, slumped in the uncomfortable metal chair for the 11th hour in a row. The pair of researchers leave the room, finally at the end of their shift. "Special Agent Park?" someone asks behind him. "Yes?" "The subject gave us nothing new today. He'll be brought back to his cell after the army gets a few hours with him." He nods and thanks the researcher, though his heart sinks. The army's agents are who most of those bruises came from. It's supposed to be none of his business. He's not even in charge of anything, he's just the special agent they sent to represent the Intelligence Agency's interest. The door closes behind him and he turns his attention back to the man in the chair on the other side of the glass. "This is stupid," he mutters to himself, talking himself in and out of what he's about to attempt. Choi San, he tries to… say loudly in his head, feeling just as stupid as he thought. Choi San. I'm on the other side of the glass. The man's face snaps up, making eye contact though he couldn't possibly. Seonghwa resists the instinct to flinch. You can hear me? A snort, an exhausted eye roll. "Obviously." Listen, the army's people are coming in a few minutes. When they're done with you, I'm going to take you back to your cell, instead of the warden. But we're not going to your cell. I'm getting you out of here. That makes San's face shift into a pout of curiosity. Seonghwa's hand slides for the button to make the glass go transparent, feeling self conscious when San's gaze travels over his face for the first time. This is me, don't try to fight me when you see me later. He wonders if San can read it all, the plan his agency sent him to enact, and his own treasonous plan layered on top of that. There's no time to ask or explain. Yeah, I can, San answers, lips twitching into a faint smile when Seonghwa flinches in surprise. I can hear you thinking my dimples are cute, too. Flustered, Seonghwa tells himself to stop thinking about it, realizes San can just hear him thinking that, which isn't any better, which makes him realize San can just hear that too, which feels just as incriminating. He presses the button to make the glass hide his face from San's side, watching as that only makes a smile stretch wider across his tired, battered face. His dimples, which are awfully cute, growing deeper. I'll see you in a few hours.
