Their data is only added to the total shown once the time pointer is beyond the dissolution of the USSR. How this should be accounted for depends on what you want to know. In the future we will have a number of different options for aggregating statistical data to offer choices to our users.

Note: The temporal Statistics plot changing in time is in part due to the fact that GCB splits countries like the Soviet Union to its post-soviet constituents, like Kazakhstan or Ukraine, however prior to the dissolution of USSR these regions do not exist as independent entities on xplris.

But more importantly, adding to what Gapminder or @ourworldindata.org offer, in @xplris.org, if you notice something interesting or unexpected, you can stop, point at the country and time, and dive right in to explore the historical context of the data.

Creating animations like this on the go is a powerful tool that can serve storytellers, researchers, and data lovers. 📈🗺️.

Similarly, you could see emissions maps per GDP unit, per unit of energy consumption, per land area, etc.

For that we can use the population dataset from the Food and Agriculture Organization (@fao.org) of the United Nations (www.fao.org/faostat/en/#...), that we already have on the platform (see bsky.app/profile/xplr...).

We can then calculate a country's per capita fossil carbon emissions by dividing its total emissions by its total population for the same time period.
FAOSTAT
FAOSTAT provides free access to food and agriculture data for over 245 countries and territories and covers all FAO regional groupings from 1961 to the most recent year available.

In the example you see, we imported the Global Carbon Budget (GCB) 2024 (essd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...) dataset of fossil carbon emissions for all countries from 1850.
Global Carbon Budget 2024
Abstract. Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere in a changing climate is critical to bette...

Using @xplris.org, you will be able to easily build beautiful, interactive maps that show countries changing over time based on your own data — whether it's GDP growth, climate change, election results, or anything else.

This discrepancy can not be resolved automatically. Interested contributors can add information from the primary sources of the datasets to our platform to resolve disputes between sources if definitive information that demonstrates problems with one value or another can be found.
April 23, 2025 at 12:36 PM
The ranges of dates shown highlight the fact that there are two different sources contributing data to the CShapes dataset [2,3]. They contain different dates that were taken from different sources for some events when that dataset was compiled.
April 23, 2025 at 12:36 PM
When a contributor to our platform adds more information from other sources to a dataset like this, the fictitious "delete South Africa" event needs to be joined with the real "create South Africa" event.

(2) Care must be taken when integrating data from multiple sources. They may assign different meaning to values that they report. In the example shown, the Namibian independence is encoded as two dates: Creation of the new territory is assigned the date of the actual change.
April 23, 2025 at 12:36 PM
The South Sudan record originated from that same dataset but was later manually enriched by a contributor to our platform with data from different sources including from the new country’s government.
April 23, 2025 at 12:36 PM
(1) The "Independence of South Sudan" is a distinct territorial-change event for Sudan. It has a name and a date associated with it. The independence of Namibia from South Africa, however, appears only as generic, auto-generated events from the CShapes dataset [1,3].

In the last two posts we looked at comparing different kinds of data sources, statistical population data and territorial data. Here we want to make a slight detour and discuss two points of note on the historical data shown.
