Lingering snow in the northeast and cold air in the Upper Midwest are the two main stories today. Northwest upper-level flow has brought in a strong cold front, resulting in single-digits and teens for highs for today from North Dakota to Illinois.

Snow squalls are likely to develop along and behind an arctic cold front across the Plains this morning and Midwest this evening. Heavy snow rates combined with damaging winds and near-zero visibility will cause extremely dangerous conditions. Stay up to date with the latest at weather.gov.

A cold and unsettled weather pattern is setting for this weekend in the eastern half of the US. A closed low pressure system over the Great Lakes and a jet streak will maintain an impressive weather system with wintry weather down to the Carolinas and rain in the Deep South. The West stays quiet.

(The air mass over Florida right now is legitimately an Arctic air mass. It was over the Chukchi Sea north of Alaska about a week ago. Prior to that, Siberia and the Bering Strait.)

Snow squalls tonight through Friday night Snow showers and snow squalls are likely to develop behind an arctic cold front tonight across the Dakotas, and then spread south-southeast into the Upper Midwest Friday, and then as far east as the Ohio Valley Friday night. Snow squalls may become widespread, leading to some areas receiving multiple rounds during this event. Dangerous driving Snow squalls create an extremely dangerous combination of heavy snow rates and strong, gusty winds, leading to icy roads and near-zero visibility. Conditions can change rapidly in snow squalls, creating dangerous travel for motorists. Snow squall safety If you encounter a snow squall while driving and cannot safely exit the roadway, reduce speed, turn on your lights and hazards, and avoid slamming on the brakes. Damaging wind and hazardous cold Even outside of any snow squalls, strong winds are expected, with wind gusts above 60 mph possible (30-50%) across the northern and central High Plains. These winds will result in hazardous travel, especially for high profile vehicles, and may create scattered power outages. Any power outages will be particularly dangerous as sub-zero wind chills arrive behind the cold front.

The messiest weather today will be east of the Mississippi with a wintry mix possible from Maine to northern Alabama. Heavy lake effect snow also possible in Upstate New York. In the Midwest, a pair of cold fronts will bring in sharply colder weather, while the West will have quiet weather.
