Open Source in 2025: clone a git repo, discover it's in a language I've never used, install the language, build the project, try the examples, realize it's missing a feature I want, have Claude Code implement the missing feature. So now I guess I get to learn Rust and see if the code is correct!

Internet Roadtrip is my favorite thing on the internet right now—it’s basically Twitch Plays Google Street View. They started in Boston, spent several weeks on a quest to cross the Canadian border, and are now exploring New Brunswick. neal.fun/internet-roa...

Does #Python pass arguments by value? Or by reference?

I'm asked this question a lot, and the answer isn't a simple "yes" or "no." (Which is even more confusing!)

In my latest video, I explain how you should think about it, and why neither term is quite right: youtu.be/Ah1J85nCdNo

Are you using OTel Ruby SDK logging in production, particularly for a Rails application? It's still marked Development, but... it seems to work and the community is responsive. Is it safe enough to give it a try at this point, or would you have reservations? #otel #observability #ruby #rails

There are so many cranes on the Platte that it can be a fight for space—as one flock takes flight, another fills in their spot. On our last morning on the river, researchers conducting aerial surveys estimated an all-time record of 736,000 Sandhill Cranes on the 80-mile stretch of the Platte River.

Anthropic's Model Context Protocol + #Claude Desktop is another level. In less than an hour I had Claude write an #MCP server for retrieving data from the YNAB (You Need a Budget) API. Now I can ask it about account balances and spending by category. It just works.

Thanks to a note on Substack with some invite codes, I have arrived. There appear to be an acceptable number of cat pictures in the Discover feed, and also @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com is here. So far so good.
