I actually think that, in the same way I would have preferred DOOM 2016 to be soundtracked by a band like Entombed rather than bedroom djent, there would be room for Lumines' visuals to accompany the wildest, fastest, most glitched out jungle/breakcore you could possibly imagine. Nightmare material.

Like, look. I just searched "megachurch music" to confirm something. This was the first thing that came up and it legitimately would not feel at all out of place on the Lumines soundtrack. I'M SORRY

I was going to go the other way and say it's empty enough that it gave me oddly Christian megachurch vibes lol

It wasn't like Tetris Effect was above this, I certainly had my issues with the soundtrack, but Tetris is a simple enough game that its visuals/audio felt novel/additive. In Lumines there's so much going on at every second already that all this other stuff felt particularly distracting. Unfortunate!

All these vague visual allusions to humanity together as one and lyrics talking like I Am Here And You Are Near And No More Fear You Are My Dear We Are Shooting Stars (not actual lyrics but you get the vibe). The kind of music you're forced to listen to when you forget your headphones at the gym.

I mean, sure? Doesn't mean it isn't also bad!

It's not all bad—when it's leaning into the edgier rave-type stuff or the chill, Bonobo-esque trip hop, it's competent. Basically any track where there's vocals, however, it goes full Chainsmokers corporate pop-EDM that sounds like it could soundtrack a PowerPoint for BP. Proper mind-numbing stuff.

And by not charitably I mean I had people claiming that not wanting to be hooked into losing dozens of hours of my life to a thing that gave me little more than bigger numbers and flashing lights in return, I was contributing to a capitalist, anti-art view of the world. Some real morons out there

Made a video on this very thing a while back that, as you might guess, people didn't take very charitably!
