Kabelo stepped forward to meet Halima’s challenge. Every vein in in the man's arms and torso stood in high relief. His eyes were keenly affixed on the target, as though he could make it obey through sheer will. Sweat poured from his chin. When he pulled the string, the bow creaked, groaned, and finally yielded. His arrow split the air with a savage whistle, passing through the target unhindered. It struck the palace wall with a solid thunk, and held, quivering like a spear. The crowd surged to its feet, cries and ululations rising.

Alden harrumphed, unwilling to concede, but some of the tightness eased from him. Timmor could see he was forming his words to come from a different angle, but a ripple of laughter broke across the ward. Tressa emerged from the scaffolds in breeches and one of Tomrick’s shirts, as was her wont, curls tumbling from a kerchief. In her arms wriggled a raven-haired boy with his father’s crystalline blue eyes, all dimples and glee. “Up! Up!” the child squealed, tiny fists reaching at once for Timmor. Even Alden’s stern face cracked under the assault. Timmor opened his arms, and the boy tumbled into them without hesitation, giggling as he was hoisted high. “By the Seven, Egan,” Timmor chuckled, holding the boy aloft. “You’ll be taller than me before the keep is done.”

You’ll hear their whistles as we pass. They’re signaling to each other that the king’s carriage approaches. We’ll turn left here in a minute. After that, two more turns and then through the Lion’s Mouth. Don’t ask me why it’s called that. No one remembers. The mouth is followed by the descent.” “The descent?” Timmor asked. “A hidden passage that leads below the Red Keep. The city, and especially the keep, are riddled with hidden tunnels and corridors. An old Valyrian thing. We found dozens during reconstruction, narrow as a coffin and twice as safe. Once the doors shut behind us, no assassin in creation could find the way without a map from my hand.” He spoke with the ease of long habit, but his eyes, sharp and wine-bright, searched Timmor’s borrowed face for the faintest trace of recognition or fear. “And yet, the Sept of Baelor,” Timmor reminded. “Someone found their way under there. Not my first time in the city, Lord Hand.” “Yes, well. Take your hit, boy. Enjoy it,” he granted. “But you only make my point for me. Also, that was my sister’s doing. Without her lead, there would still be a sept for you to see.”

Not a villain, sensu stricto, but rather a primary antagonist… The Steward is all that remains of a long-term bio-research facility. Its purposes, to collect and catalogue life with the aim of interceding with nascent sapient species before they trashed their respective biomes in the attempt to escape their gravity wells. The Builders are long gone, but the Steward remains, carrying out its eternal instructions, to maintain the viability of the Enclosures at all cost, even when that’s in conflict with the wishes of the sapient beings therein.

His name is Rashiné He entered the Enclosure roughly 80k years ago with the first large wave of mixed folk hailing from deep within an area of transition between Neanderthals and Sapiens east of the modern-day Caspian Sea. There was a prolonged period of violence where Rashiné’s people faced aggression from prior waves of both Neanderthals and Sapiens who had come from eras before contact of their species. With help from Tourr’di, Nikho, and those who follow the Red Brothers, he led his people to the safety of the Lake region far to the west where they still live in isolation in towns of floating woven reed upon the water.

Solid Marcher ingots, sound as your master’s walls. Tomrick Iron-Tongue himself says he won’t work with less.” There were a few murmurs of assent in the crowd. Tomrick’s name carried weight. Garrick leaned into it like a smith leaning on his hammer. Edric folded his hands atop the ledger, gaze flat. “Tomrick’s tongue is silver when he’s praising, sharper than steel when he’s not. But he does not set Bronzegate’s prices. I do.” The merchant grinned, gap-toothed. “Aye, and you’ll not see another load like mine before winter. You’ll pay fair for it, crow, or your foundations will go wanting.” The hall murmured, hungry for the clash. Edric’s quill scratched, a number crisp and deliberate. He turned the ledger so Garrick could see. “Ten percent above last shipment. No more.” Garrick scoffed. “Twenty. Else I roll my wagons back the way they came. You’ll not patch walls with parchment.”
